Findlay Competes on the Second Day of GLIAC Championship
Hillsdale, MI – The University of Findlay men's and women's track and field teams competed on the second day of the 2015 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship on Thursday, April 30. After two days of competition, the men sit in fifth place with 31 points and the women are in third with 31 points.
Men
Justin Welch continued his great senior season and earned another championship as he won the hammer throw with a distance of 229'01", an automatic qualifier for the national championship. Taylor Miller also scored a point as he finished in eighth place with his provisional distance of 187'11".
Alexander Zolotoglavyy earned himself a GLIAC championship as he brought home first place in the long jump with a provisional distance of 24'01.5". Michael Bruce also made the podium as his jump of 23'06.75" earned him a third place finish. The final Oilers athlete to earn points in the event was Demorrio Leggett who took sixth place with a jump of 22'11.75".
Dillon Webster took the top qualifying spot in the 800 meter run with his time of 1:53.00.
In the 1500 meter run, Matias Trampe-Kindt qualified for the finals as he finished with the ninth fastest time of the day, finishing in 4:03.77.
Findlay had a pair of finals qualifiers in the 400 meter dash as Sergi Torres and Maliik Briggs had the fifth and sixth fastest times. Their times were 48.79 and 48.95, respectively.
Women
Pam Showman and Lydia Guagenti were both in action again as they both participated in the final events in the heptathlon. Showman's best event on the second day was the javelin throw where she took second with a throw of 114'06". This was also Guagenti's best event as her throw of 111'07" was good enough for third place. Showman ended up winning the event to become Findlay's first GLIAC champion of 2015. She won the event with 5,049 points, a provisional in the event. Guagenti also made the podium as she took third place, amassing 4,709 points, also a provisional mark.
In hammer throw, Kendra Averesch earned a provisional distance with a throw of 182'01", good enough for fifth place. Teammate Erica King finished close behind with her provisional throw of 179'01", earning her sixth place.
Taylor Ackerman earned points in the long jump as she took fifth place and distanced 18'09.00".
Erica Bettac was the top Oilers finisher in the 3,000 meter run as she finished in a time of 10:46.06, earning her fifth place and a provisional mark.
Samantha Grippe finished with the second fastest qualifying time in the 800 meter run as she won her heat with a time of 2:15.25.
Maud Sanmiquel competed in the 100 meter hurdles and qualified for the finals with a provisional qualifying time of 14.23. Showman also competed and qualified with the eighth and final spot with her time of 14.44. Sanmiquel was busy in the 400 meter hurdles as well and took the top spot for the final as she earned a provisional time of 1:02.22.
The Oilers have a 400 meter dash finals qualifier as Shelby Stump finished with the eighth fastest time, a 59.09 finish.
