Valentine Invitational Underway

The University of Findlay track and field teams traveled to Boston, Massachusetts on Friday, February 10 for the first day of the Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University. The Valentine Invitational is a two day event that features athletes across all NCAA divisions with about 100 athletes per event. The majority of Friday's competition consisted of the women's team, and the men's team will compete on Saturday.

Running Events

The 4x400 meter relay team featuring junior Milani Glass, freshman Semoy Hemmings, junior Laura Hernandez and freshman Jenna Shipman finished in 13th with a time of 3:54.10.

Glass claimed 6th in the 60 meter hurdles with a NCAA provisional time of 8.80.

Hemmings finished 48th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 58.51.

In the 800 meter run, Shipman crossed the finish line in 2:20.16 to finish 64th and freshman Madisen Borer came in at the 2:23.31 mark to place 87th.

Field Events

In the shot put, a handful of Oilers put on an impressive performance on the evening. Senior Alex DeVincentis claimed 2nd with a NCAA provisional distance of 14.18m. Junior Tynelle Gumbs placed 3rd and provo'd with a heave of 13.97m. Also finishing in the top ten was junior Trevia Gumbs who captured 9th with a toss of 12.79m. Sophomore Holly Averesch just missed out on a top ten performance, as she earned 12th with a distance of 12.64m.

An even more impressive showing may have come in the weight throw with five Oilers finishing in the top ten, with two Oilers claiming the top two spots. Tynelle Gumbs stole the show by capturing the gold with an NCAA automatic qualifying distance of 21.32m.  This mark currently ranks her third in Division II and also sets a new University of Findlay indoor meet record.  The previous record of 21.03m was set back in 2013 by Jessica Rowland.

Senior Erica King earned the silver and provo'd with a toss of 18.27m. Trevia Gumbs (5th | 17.31m), senior Liz Streacker (6th | 17.24m) and DeVincentis (10th | 16.54m) also met the NCAA provisional mark in the weight throw for Findlay.

The Valentine Invitational continues tomorrow on Saturday, February 11th with the running events set to begin at 10:30 a.m. and the field events also starting at 10:30 a.m.
