Tynelle Gumbs Crowned National Champion

The University of Findlay track and field teams traveled to Birmingham, Alabama for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field National Championships on Thursday, March 9. Competition will continue throughout the weekend with the meet ending on Saturday, March 11.

Junior Tynelle Gumbs was crowned the NCAA Division II National Champion and earned All-American status in the women's weight throw. She finished in 1st place with a throw of 21.41m (70'3"). Gumbs is only the second indoor national champion in the history of the women's track team. The previous national champion was Raven Clay in 2012 in the 60m hurdles. Gumbs has had a stellar season with the Oilers, as she recently won the GLIAC Championship in the weight throw and set the school record in the event as well this year.

Senior Erica King and junior Trevia Gumbs also competed in the women's weight throw and both earned All-American honors. King claimed 7th with a toss of 19.35m (63'3") and Gumbs earned 9th with a heave of 18.80m (61'8.75"). Senior Liz Streacker competed in the event as well and finished 18th with a distance of 16.09m (52'9.5").

In the men's weight throw, sophomore Austin Combs captured 4th and earned All-American status with a toss of 20.40m (66'11.25").

In the 400 meter dash preliminaries, sophomore George Effah just missed qualifying for the finals. He finished 9th with a time of 47.98. His efforts did earn him second team All-American honors. Junior Sergi Torres also competed in the event and placed 14th with a time of 48.24.

Junior Trey Everett currently stands in 2nd place in the heptathlon after four events. Everett placed 1st in the high jump, 3rd in the long jump, 7th in the shot put and 13th in the 60 meter dash for a total of 3,055 points. He trails the leader by 200 points with three events remaining. The heptathlon will wrap-up on Friday, March 10 at 12:20 p.m.

Everett will also be competing in the high jump tomorrow at 3 p.m. and junior Milani Glass will compete in the 60 meter hurdles prelims at 5:15 p.m.
