Sportsmanship at NCAA DII Indoor National Championship

Findlay, OH – On March 10, 2017, University of Findlay track athlete Trey Everett was competing on his second day at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championship. He was in fourth place heading into the final event, the 1000 meter run.

With one lap to go, Everett stumbled on the banked corner of the track, stepped off the track to the inside, and immediately stepped back on. Trey finished out the race and ended up taking fifth place in the event to earn first team all-American honors.

What Everett did not know, is that a coach had filed a protest of his stumble, arguing that Everett had not run the full 1000 meters, but rather had only run 999 meters. Everett was disqualified and was asked to give his trophy back.

University of Central Missouri's Devin Cornelius, who had finished one spot behind Trey in sixth place, was bumped up to fifth. Cornelius did not feel right about it and, later that day, found Everett and handed him the fifth place trophy and said, "You deserve this".
