Findlay Completes Day One of Penn Relays
The University of Findlay track and field teams traveled to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Thursday, April 27 for the 123rd annual Penn Relays at Franklin Field hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. The Penn Relays are the oldest and longest track meet competition that began in 1895. It features the premiere athletes from all across the nation.
In the women's discus throw three Oilers finished in the top ten. Junior Alex DeVincentis took 4th with an NCAA automatic qualifying throw of 50.14m (164-6). This mark currently places her 8th in the nation in Division II competition. Junior Tynelle Gumbs claimed 7th with a NCAA provisional throw of 47.95m (157-3) and junior Trevia Gumbs finished 9th and also met the provisional mark with a heave of 46.38m (152-1).
DeVincentis also competed in the championship portion of the shot put and claimed 11th with a NCAA provisional throw of 14.71m (48-3.25).
Tr. Gumbs competed in the college division of the shot put and came away with a 12th place finish with a NCAA provisional mark of 13.98m (45-10.5).
Three Oilers competed in the championship division of the women's hammer throw. Senior Erica King, who won the event last year, earned 8th with a NCAA provisional throw of 57.65m (189-1), senior Liz Streacker finished 12th and provo'd with a toss off 52.76m (173-1) and Ty. Gumbs took 14th with a distance of 49.93m (163-9).
The women's 4x100 meter relay team consisting of junior Milani Glass, freshman Semoy Hemmings, freshman Jenna Shipman and sophomore Madison Stechshulte clocked in at 47.86 to place 38th.
The women's 4x400 meter relay team comprised of Hemmings, Glass, senior Nicole Burlinson and Shipman finished in 3:51.95 for 39th.
The Penn Relays continue tomorrow and will conclude Saturday, April 29. The Oilers track and field team will also have athletes competing at the Ashland Alumni Open tomorrow and Saturday.
