Day Two of GLIAC T&F Championships
The University of Findlay track and field teams traveled to Allendale, Mich. for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Grand Valley State University on May 4.
Three Oilers finished in the top five of the women's hammer throw, with senior Erica King repeating as the champion for the second year in a row. King won the event with a NCAA automatic qualifying throw of 60.36m (198-0.25). Junior Tynelle Gumbs claimed 3rd and also booked her trip to the NCAA Championships with an automatic qualifying throw of 59.30m (194-6.50). Senior Liz Streacker earned 5th with an NCAA provisional throw of 56.45m (185-2.25).
Ty. Gumbs also competed in the javelin throw and collected 4th with a distance of 37.92m (124-4.75).
In the men's hammer throw sophomore Austin Combs finished 6th with a NCAA provisional toss of 61.56m (201-11.50).
Junior Milani Glass also won the 100 meter hurdle prelims and qualified for the finals with a NCAA provisional time of 13.92. She also claimed 3rd in the 200 meter dash prelims with a time of 24.74 to earn a spot in the finals.
Freshmen Clint Recker and Lenell Shelby III tied for 9th in the men's 110 meter hurdle prelims with a time of 15.53. Recker was awarded the last spot in tomorrow's finals for the event.
Shelby III was able to qualify for the finals in the 400 meter hurdles after posting a time of 53.12 in the prelims to claim 2nd. This mark meets the NCAA provisional and currently ranks him 12th in the nation.
In the women's 400 meter dash, freshman Semoy Hemmings qualified for the finals with a time of 57.33 in the prelims to earn 3rd. In the men's 400, sophomore George Effah also qualified for the finals after capturing 5th in the prelims with a time of 49.12.
The women's 4x100 meter relay team featuring Glass, Hemmings, freshman Jenna Shipman and sophomore Madison Stechshulte qualified for the finals with a 6th place finish in the prelims with a time of 48.14. The men's squad of sophomore Khalil Capers, sophomore Jaye Williams, sophomore Zach Jellison and Shelby III also finished 6th in the prelims and qualified for the finals with a time of 42.33.
Sophomore Jonathan Allen earned 9th in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 31:37.05.
After two days of competition, the Oiler women stand in 3rd place with 25 points and the Oiler men are in 12th with 3 points.
The last day of the GLIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be tomorrow, May 5. The field events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and the running events are slated for 11:10 a.m.
