GLIAC Outdoor Championship Meet Comes to a Close

The University of Findlay track and field teams completed the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday, May 5 at Grand Valley State University.

Junior Milani Glass brought home the gold in the 100 meter hurdles with a NCAA provisional time of 13.81. This is a new personal best for Glass and ranks her 11th in division II competition. Glass also took 3rd in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.62.

Freshman Lenell Shelby III captured 1st in the men's 400 meter hurdles with a NCAA provisional time of 52.42.

Junior Tynelle Gumbs was also crowned a GLIAC champion as she took 1st and provo'd in the women's discus throw with a distance of 48.69m (159-8.75). Junior Alex DeVincentis earned 2nd in the event with a provisional toss of 48.46m (158-11.75).

In the women's shot put three Oilers finished in the top five and met the NCAA provisional mark. DeVincentis claimed 2nd (15.01m|49-2.75), junior Trevia Gumbs placed 4th (14.61m|47-11) and sophomore Holly Averesch finished 5th (14.04m|46-0.75).

Senior Ben Hahler took 3rd in the men's shot put with a NCAA provisional throw of 17.29m (56-8.50).

Senior Derek Spindler cleared a height of 4.87m (15-11.50) to claim 3rd and provo in the men's pole vault.

In the women's 400 meter dash freshman Semoy Hemmings finished in 56.32 to grab 3rd, while sophomore George Effah clocked in at 48.85 in the men's 400 for 6th.

The women's 4x100 meter relay team featuring Glass, Hemmings, freshman Jenna Shipman and sophomore Madison Stechshulte placed 6th with a time of 48.45, while the men's 4x100 team of sophomore Khalil Capers, sophomore Jaye Williams, sophomore Zach Jellison and Shelby III claimed 7th with a time of 42.86.

The women's 4x400 meter relay team consisting of Hemmings, Glass, senior Nicole Burlinson and Shipman collected 7th with a time of 3:59.31, while the men's 4x400 team of Effah, Shelby III, sophomore Zach Jellison and freshman Kurt Grieger also placed 7th with a time of 3:19.95.

In the men's 110m hurdles freshman Clint Recker collected 7th after sporting a time of 14.86.

The Findlay women finished 2nd with 87 points, and the Findlay men finished 7th with 34 points.

At the end of the meet, post-meet awards were given to athletes that stood out from the competition. Lenell Shelby III received the Freshman Track Athlete of the Year award. Tynelle Gumbs received the Field Athlete of the Meet award for her performance this weekend and she also received the Field Athlete of the Year award. This is the second consecutive year a Findlay female athlete won the GLIAC Field Athlete of Meet award as former UF standout Lydia Guagenti won the award last year.

The Oilers return to competition on Thursday, May 11 for the Hillsdale Last Chance Meet to prepare for the NCAA Division II National Championships which will be held May 25-27.
