Oilers to Face Hillsdale, Saginaw Valley State this Week

The University of Findlay women's basketball team will play a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contests this week.  They will travel to Hillsdale, Michigan to face Hillsdale College at 6 pm on Thursday, December 8 and then return home to host Saginaw Valley State University at 1 pm on Saturday, December 10 in Croy Gymnasium.

The Series

The Oilers currently trail 17-14 in the all-time series against Hillsdale dating back to the 1985-86 campaign when Findlay came out on top by a score of 74-47.

The two programs split the season series last year with each team winning on their home floor.

The Oilers fell 86-46 on the road and then came back with a 66-63 win at home later in the year.

In the loss, Clare Aubry led Findlay's offense with 12 points while Saira House tallied ten points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals.

In the win, Kayla Brown led the way with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting. She also tallied five rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Aubry netted 17 points, hitting 4-of-9 three pointers, while Laura Bardall contributed 15 points, six rebounds and four assists.

The Oilers currently hold an 11-9 advantage in the all-time series against Saginaw Valley State dating back to the 1978-79 campaign, which saw the Cardinals win by an 88-48 margin.

Findlay won 72-63 against Saginaw Valley State last year as Clare Aubry and Kayla Brown each scored 16 points apiece during the victory.

Laura Bardall had solid all-around play with 15 points, seven assists and six rebounds while Tai Dotson recorded her first career double-double with ten points and ten boards.

The University of Findlay

The University of Findlay women's basketball team captured a 59-44 victory over Northwood University on Thursday, December 1 in Croy Gymnasium to run their record to 4-1 on the season.

The Oilers, who now stand at 1-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), fell behind 44-40 at the 11:46 mark of the second half and then dominated the rest of the game.

Down by four, the Oilers closed the game on a 19-0 run in the final 11 minutes of the contest as the Oilers came up with a number of steals and forced the Timberwolves into difficult shots.

As a team, the Oilers came up with a season-high 19 steals and forced Northwood into 30 turnovers, which led to 29 points for Findlay.

Senior forward Kaitlyn Nelson led the Oilers with a season-high 16 points and six rebounds.  She hit 8-of-13 shots and also added three blocks and two steals.

Junior forward Kayla Brown continued her solid play with 15 points, seven rebounds and six steals while sophomore guard Saira House added seven points, seven assists, a career-high seven steals and six rebounds.

Hillsdale College

The Chargers are currently 3-3 on the season with a 0-2 record in conference play.

Chelsea Harrison leads the team with a 16.5 points per game average while Marissa DeMott (15.3), Angela Bisaro (12.3) and Katie Bildner (10.0) are also scoring in double figures on a nightly basis.

The Cardinals are currently 2-4 on the season with a 0-1 record in the GLIAC.

Jasmine Woods leads the team with an 11.5 points per game average while Cheritee Green is contributing 10.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per contest.

Defense Wins Championships

The Oilers rank third in the GLIAC in points allowed, giving up only 54.2 per game to their opponents.

Defending the Basket

The Oilers rank third in the conference in blocked shots per game at 4.2 per contest.

Individually, senior forward Kaitlyn Nelson ranks third in the GLIAC with 2.4 blocked shots per game.

Stroking 3's

Senior guard Clare Aubry is hitting 41.7 percent of her three point attempts this season, the seventh best mark in the GLIAC.

She also ranks ninth in the conference in made triples, connecting on 2.0 per contest.

Automatic from the Line

The Oilers are ranked seventh in the GLIAC in free throw shooting percentage, connecting on 72.6 percent of their attempts on the season.

Individually, junior forward Kayla Brown is ranked fourth with a free throw shooting percentage of 90.9.

Shooting a High Percentage

The Oilers are hitting 42.9 percent of their field goal attempts this year, the fifth best mark in the GLIAC.

Individually, senior forward Kaitlyn Nelson ranks fourth with a 54.8 percent shooting clip while junior forward Kayla Brown checks in ninth with a 52.1 percent shooting clip.

Dropping Dimes

The Oilers are dishing out 15.6 assists per game on the year, the fourth best total in the league.

Individually, sophomore guard Saira House ranks third with 4.6 assists per contest.

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 13.4 steals per game on the year, the second best total in the conference.

Individually, sophomore guard Saira House leads the conference with 3.2 steals per game while teammate Kayla Brown, a junior forward, sits third with 3.0 steals per contest.

Swatting Shots

Senior forward Kaitlyn Nelson has been swatting shots at a record pace during her career and will have the opportunity to break the school record for most blocks this season.

Nelson has blocked 136 shots during her tenure with the program and is chasing Kelly Carder, who swatted 158 shots from 1996-99.

GLIAC Preseason Poll

The Oilers were picked to finish second in the South Division of the GLIAC this season.  They received 152 votes and ten first place votes, to fall just short of Ashland University (153) in the poll.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Senior guards Laura Bardall and Clare Aubry were both picked as preseason first team all-conference in voting conducted by the coaches within the league.

Bardall was a first team all-conference pick last season after averaging 14.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. 

Aubry meanwhile was a second team all-league pick as a junior and averaged 15.0 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.

1,000 Point Club

Senior guard Laura Bardall ranks eighth all-time at Findlay with 1,262 career points.

Bardall was injured in the Oilers exhibition game against Bowling Green State University and will not have a chance to build on her total this year.
