Oilers Face Ashland, Wayne State in GLIAC Play

The University of Findlay women's basketball team will play a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contests this week against Ashland University and Wayne State University.  The Oilers will travel to Ashland, Ohio to take on the Eagles at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and then return home to face the Warriors at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday in Croy Gymnasium.

The Series

The Oilers trail 18-15 in the all-time series against Ashland dating back to the 1990-91 campaign when the Eagles were victorious by a score of 58-42.

Last season, the Oilers swept the regular season series with two overtime wins.  They did however fall 75-50 in the first round of the GLIAC Tournament to Ashland in Croy Gymnasium.

In the Oilers 80-77 double overtime win at home, Kaitlyn Nelson registered 24 points, 17 rebounds and seven blocks while Clare Aubry netted 21 points.

In the Oilers 81-73 overtime win at Ashland, Aubry recorded 30 points while Kayla Brown chipped in 20 points of her own.

In the Oilers loss during the GLIAC Tournament, Clare Aubry once again led the team with 14 points.

The Oilers hold a 16-14 advantage in the all-time series against Wayne State dating back to the 1990-91 campaign when they came out on the winning end by a score of 57-48.

Findlay won both games against the Warriors last year, winning 69-42 in Detroit and 66-62 at home.

In the win on the road, Laura Bardall led four Findlay players in double figures with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting.

Tai Dotson added 11 points and eight rebounds while Saira House and Kaitlyn Nelson scored ten points apiece.

In the win at home, Laura Bardall led the way 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting.

Saira House scored 13 points and also tallied seven assists to go along with five rebounds and two steals.

Tai Dotson chipped in 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting to go along with five boards in the win.

The University of Findlay

The University of Findlay women's basketball team came away with a 74-49 win over Malone University on Friday, December 30 at their Holiday Tournament in Croy Gymnasium. 

The Oilers built a 39-23 advantage at the break and kept the pressure on in the second half as they claimed their 17th straight win over the Pioneers.

Findlay hit 42.6 percent (26-of-61) of their shots and held Malone to a 37.2 percent (16-of-43) shooting clip.  They also out-rebounded the Pioneers by a 37-30 margin and forced Malone into 27 turnovers.

The Oilers, who registered 16 steals in the win, scored 32 points off of turnovers and held a 30-13 advantage in points off the bench.

Junior forward Kayla Brown once again led the Oilers offensive attack with a game-high 17 points on 5-of-11 shooting.  She also added a game-high nine rebounds to go along with four steals in 27 minutes of action.

Senior guard Clare Aubry also reached double figures with 14 points while sophomore guard Ashley Andrews and junior forward Tai Dotson recorded eight points apiece off the bench.

Ashland University

The Eagles sport a 10-1 record on the year with a 5-0 mark in the GLIAC.

Kari Daugherty is having an excellent season with averages of 22.5 points, 10.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.

Jena Stutzman meanwhile is averaging 14.3 points 3.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game for the Eagles.

Wayne State University

The Warriors have an overall record of 7-5 with a 2-3 mark in the GLIAC. 

Phaebre Colbert is averaging 12.2 points and 7.9 rebounds per game while Juanita Cochran is scoring 12.0 points and grabbing 9.0 rebounds per outing.

Defense Wins Championships

The Oilers rank fifth in the GLIAC in points allowed, giving up only 57.5 to their opponents.

Defending the Basket

The Oilers rank third in the conference in blocked shots per game at 4.2 per contest.

Individually, senior forward Kaitlyn Nelson ranks fourth in the GLIAC with 2.5 blocked shots per game.

Automatic from the Line

Junior forward Kayla Brown ranks eighth in the GLIAC in free throw shooting percentage as she hits 87.1 percent of her attempts.

Senior guard Clare Aubry is checks in tenth with a 84.8 percent shooting clip from the charity stripe.

As a team, the Oilers are hitting 73.5 percent from the line, the fifth best mark in the GLIAC.

Shooting a High Percentage

Junior forward Kayla Brown ranks seventh in the GLIAC in field goal shooting percentage, hitting 50.4 percent of her tries.

As a team, the Oilers rank fourth in the GLIAC with a 42.3 percent shooting clip.

Contesting Shots

The Oilers have made life difficult for opposing teams, holding them to a mere 37.5 percent shooting clip, which ranks eighth in the league.

Dropping Dimes

The Oilers are dishing out 14.8 assists per game on the year, the third best total in the league.

Individually, sophomore guard Saira House ranks fourth with 4.3 assists per contest.

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 12.9 steals per game on the year, the second best total in the conference.

Individually, junior forward Kayla Brown and sophomore guard Saira House rank fourth with 2.5 steals per contest.

Putting Points on the Board

Junior forward Kayla Brown is leading the team and ranks ninth in the GLIAC with a 14.1 points per game average.

Teammate Clare Aubry also shows up amongst the league leaders and is ranked 16th with a 12.3 points per game average.

As a team, the Oilers rank fifth in the league with 68.1 points per game.

Stroking 3's

Junior forward Kayla Brown is hitting 39.3 percent of her three point attempts, which is the ninth best mark in the GLIAC.

Her 1.8 three pointers per game is the 11th highest total in the conference as well.

Swatting Shots

Senior forward Kaitlyn Nelson has been swatting shots at a record pace during her career and will have the opportunity to break the school record for most blocks this season.

Nelson has blocked 154 shots during her tenure with the program and is chasing Kelly Carder, who swatted 158 shots from 1996-99.

GLIAC Preseason Poll

The Oilers were picked to finish second in the South Division of the GLIAC this season.  They received 152 votes and ten first place votes, to fall just short of Ashland University (153) in the poll.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Senior guards Laura Bardall and Clare Aubry were both picked as preseason first team all-conference in voting conducted by the coaches within the league.

Bardall was a first team all-conference pick last season after averaging 14.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. 

Aubry meanwhile was a second team all-league pick as a junior and averaged 15.0 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.

1,000 Point Club

Senior guard Laura Bardall ranks eighth all-time at Findlay with 1,262 career points.

Bardall was injured in the Oilers exhibition game against Bowling Green State University and will not have a chance to build on her total this year.
