Oilers on the Road at Lake Erie, Wayne State

The University of Findlay women's basketball team will play a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contests this week against Lake Erie College and Wayne State University.  The Oilers will travel to Painesville, Ohio to take on the Storm at 6 pm on Thursday and then head to Detroit, Michigan on Saturday to face Wayne State University at 1 pm.

The Series

The Oilers have never lost to Lake Erie and sport a 9-0 record against the Storm dating back to the 1988-89 campaign when Findlay won by a score of 106-54.

The Oilers swept the season series last year, winning 67-48 at home and 73-49 on the road.

In the win at home, Clare Aubry led the team with 17 points while Saira House had 13 points, six assists, four rebounds, two steals and a block.

Laura Bardall added 11 points, 11 rebounds and four assists while Tai Dotson contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

In the win on the road, Kendra Elam led the team with a career-high 19 points on the strength of a 5-of-5 showing from behind the three point line.

House stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals.

The Oilers hold a 16-15 advantage in the all-time series against Wayne State dating back to the 1990-91 campaign when they came out on the winning end by a score of 57-48.

Last week, the Warriors topped the Oilers in overtime, winning 75-72 in Croy Gymnasium.

Aubry led the way with 23 points while Kayla Brown and Carlay Stahl each scored 11 points apiece in the loss.

The University of Findlay

The University of Findlay women's basketball team suffered a 75-72 overtime defeat at the hands of Wayne State University on Saturday, January 7 in Croy Gymnasium.

Wayne State shot 50.8 percent (33-of-65) from the floor while the Oilers were only able to connect on 36.6 percent (26-of-71) of their shots.

The Oilers did however force 24 turnovers and convert 13-of-16 (81.3%) shots from the free throw line.

Senior guard Clare Aubry led the team after scoring a season-high 23 points on 7-of-18 shooting.

Junior forward Kayla Brown contributed 11 points, four rebounds and four steals while red-shirt freshman forward Carlay Stahl had 11 points off the bench, finishing a perfect 4-of-4 from the field.

Sophomore guard Ashley Andrews came off the bench to provide a spark with four points, a season-high seven assists and three steals while junior forward Tai Dotson provided nine points and six rebounds off the pine.

Lake Erie College

The Storm have a 10-2 record and are 4-1 in GLIAC play.

Stephanie Rogers leads the team and averages 16.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per contest.

Jen Caiola (12.7) and Alyssa Wagers (12.5) are also averaging in double figures on the season.

Wayne State University

The Warriors have an overall record of 9-5 with a 4-3 mark in the GLIAC.

Stefani Munro (11.8), Juanita Cochran (11.7), Phaebre Colbert (11.5), Paige Sickmiller (11.1) and Deanna Crumpton (10.3) all score in double digits on a nightly basis.

Defense Wins Championships

The Oilers rank seventh in the GLIAC in points allowed, giving up only 60.1 to their opponents.

Defending the Basket

The Oilers rank fourth in the conference in blocked shots per game at 3.9 per contest.

Individually, senior forward Kaitlyn Nelson ranks fourth in the GLIAC with 2.2 blocked shots per game.

Her total is also the 287th best mark in the nation.

Automatic from the Line

Junior forward Kayla Brown ranks seventh in the GLIAC in free throw shooting percentage as she hits 85.7 percent of her attempts.

Senior guard Clare Aubry is checks in 13th with a 81.4 percent shooting clip from the charity stripe.

As a team, the Oilers are hitting 73.0 percent from the line, the sixth best mark in the GLIAC.

Shooting a High Percentage

Junior forward Kayla Brown ranks 11th in the GLIAC in field goal shooting percentage, hitting 46.8 percent of her tries.

As a team, the Oilers rank sixth in the GLIAC with a 41.0 percent shooting clip.

Dropping Dimes

The Oilers are dishing out 14.2 assists per game on the year, the fifth best total in the league.

Individually, sophomore guard Saira House ranks sixth with 4.0 assists per contest.

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 12.4 steals per game on the year, the second best total in the conference and the 31st best mark in the nation.

Individually, junior forward Kayla Brown leads the team and ranks fourth in the conference in steals per game with 2.6 per contest.

Sophomore guard Saira House is also highly ranked, checking in fifth with 2.4 steals per game.

Putting Points on the Board

Junior forward Kayla Brown is leading the team and ranks tenth in the GLIAC with a 13.4 points per game average.

Teammate Clare Aubry also shows up amongst the league leaders and is ranked 12th with a 12.9 points per game average.

As a team, the Oilers rank fifth in the league with 67.2 points per game.

Stroking 3's

Junior forward Kayla Brown is hitting 38.2 percent of her three point attempts on the season, which is the 12th best mark in the GLIAC.

Her 1.9 three pointers per game is the 11th highest total in the conference as well.

Swatting Shots

Senior forward Kaitlyn Nelson has been swatting shots at a record pace during her career and will have the opportunity to break the school record for most blocks this season.

Nelson has blocked 155 shots during her tenure with the program and is chasing Kelly Carder, who swatted 158 shots from 1996-99.

GLIAC Player of the Week

Junior forward Kayla Brown was tabbed the GLIAC South Division Player of the Week for the first time in her career on January 3, 2012.

Brown led the Oilers to a pair of wins at their Holiday Tournament on December 29-30 by averaging 15.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

Winning GLIAC South Division Titles

The Oilers won their first GLIAC South Division title last season since capturing the 1999-00 crown.  They made it two in a row with a 66-63 win over Hillsdale College on February 24, 2011.

As a program, the Oilers have won titles in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010 and 2011.

GLIAC Tournament

The Oilers have appeared in the GLIAC Tournament three times in their history.  During the 2009-10 campaign, the Oilers won a GLIAC Tournament game for the first time in school history, defeating Hillsdale College 66-62 to advance to the second round.

They were knocked out of the tournament last year by Northern Michigan University, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 71-64 in the second round of competition.

GLIAC Preseason Poll

The Oilers were picked to finish second in the South Division of the GLIAC this season.  They received 152 votes and ten first place votes, to fall just short of Ashland University (153) in the poll.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Senior guards Laura Bardall and Clare Aubry were both picked as preseason first team all-conference in voting conducted by the coaches within the league.

Bardall was a first team all-conference pick last season after averaging 14.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. 

Aubry meanwhile was a second team all-league pick as a junior and averaged 15.0 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.

1,000 Point Club

Senior guard Laura Bardall ranks eighth all-time at Findlay with 1,262 career points.

Bardall was injured in the Oilers exhibition game against Bowling Green State University and will not have a chance to build on her total this year.
