Brown Leads Oilers to 78-66 Win Over Northwood
The University of Findlay women's basketball team remained undefeated with a 78-66 win over Northwood University on Saturday, Dec. 1 in Croy Gymnasium. The Oilers now stand at 4-0 on the year with a 2-0 record in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
The Oilers found themselves down six points at 30-24 with 4:50 remaining in the opening half before closing the period on a 16-2 run to enter the break with a 40-32 advantage. Their lead would not last however as Northwood came storming back to take a 61-60 lead with 6:31 left to play.
Down by one, the Oilers turned to senior forward Kayla Brown. Brown answered the call by converting a four-point play on a made three and free throw before junior guard Ashley Andrews extended the Oilers lead to 66-61 with 5:39 showing on the clock. After a pair of free throws by Northwood's Aleigha Wylie, Brown went on a 10-0 run by herself to put the game out of reach.
Brown started the run with a three pointer at the 4:53 mark of the game. She then scored on a lay-up before hitting another triple with 4:00 left. The Mt. Blanchard, Ohio native then converted a jumper from the free throw line to make the score 76-65 in favor of the Oilers with 3:05 to play in the contest.
Brown's ten-point run came in a matter of only 1:48 of playing time and took the life out of Northwood's comeback attempt.
The Oilers shot 43.8 percent (28-of-64) from the floor and held a 38-30 advantage on the boards. They also converted 17-of-20 (85%) tries from the free throw line and forced 26 turnovers in the win.
Brown led the team with 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting. She also connected on 4-of-7 three point attempts and added five steals in the game.
Senior forward Tai Dotson contributed 12 points and seven rebounds while Andrews registered eight points, five assists and four steals.
Sophomore forward Lacey Kessler provided valuable minutes of the bench and finished with six points, five rebounds and four steals in only 11 minutes of action.
The Timberwolves were led by Wylie and Sarah Spring, who each scored 14 points.
The Oilers will hit the road next week to take on Michigan Technological University on Thursday, Dec. 6. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. in Houghton, Mich.
