Oilers Head to Urbana on Wednesday

The Oilers women's basketball team will be on the road at Urbana University for a non-conference contest on Wednesday, Dec. 19.  The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in Urbana, Ohio.

The Series

The Oilers currently hold a commanding 30-5 advantage in the all-time series against the Blue Knights dating back to the 1978-79 campaing when Findlay was victorious by a score of 56-39.

Last season the Oilers claimed a 76-50 win over Urbana in Croy Gymnasium.

Kayla Brown led the team with 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting.  Brown also added four assists, three steals and three assists in the game.

Kaitlyn Nelson contributed a season-high 12 points while registered 12 points and four assists.

Lacey Kessler came of the bench to add nine points and six rebounds while Tai Dotson chipped in eight points during the victory.

The Oilers shot 51.9 percent (28-of-54) from the floor and scored 42 of their points in the paint.  The Oilers also racked up 23 assists on their 28 field goals and out-rebounded Urbana by a 39-29 margin.

The University of Findlay

The Oilers claimed a 61-53 win over Grand Valley State University on Monday, Dec. 17 in Croy Gymnasium.  The win, which featured ten ties and ten lead changes, gives the Oilers a 6-2 record on the year with a 4-2 mark in the GLIAC.

Tai Dotson gave the Oilers a 50-49 lead with 3:30 left when she scored on a short shot off of an assist by Kayla Brown.  She then split a pair of free throws on the Oilers next offensive possession before converting a three point play in the paint at the 2:39 mark.  The run gave Findlay a 54-49 lead as they regained momentum.

After a bucket by the Lakers, Brown scored on a drive to give the Oilers a 56-51 advantage with 59 seconds left.  Dotson then split a pair of free throws after a turnover by the Lakers to make the score 57-51 with only 35 ticks showing on the clock.

Kendra Elam and Margaret Wuebker then hit two free throws apiece down the stretch to seal the game.

Dotson led the way with a career-high 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting while Brown added 15 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Lighting Up the Scoreboard

Senior forward Kayla Brown has been scoring in bunches to start the season, averaging 19.4 points per game.  Her points per game average is the third best in the GLIAC and is enabling Findlay to average 72.4 points per outing, the fourth best mark in the league.

Nationally, Brown ranks 16th in points per game average.

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 12.8 steals per game, the second best total in the GLIAC and the 23rd best mark in the nation. 

Individually, senior forward Kayla Brown ranks second in the GLIAC with 3.1 steals per game while sophomore forward Lacey Kessler is 12th with 1.9 steals per contest.

Forcing Turnovers

The Oilers are forcing 23.2 turnovers per game, the best total in the GLIAC.

Triple Your Pleasure

Senior forward Kayla Brown ranks second in the conference in three point shooting, making 2.4 per game.  She has connected on 38.0 percent (19-of-50) of her attempts thus far.

Freshman guard Alyssa Grevenkamp leads the conference in three point shooting percentage as she is hitting 60.0 percent of her three point tries.

Shooting Range

The Oilers rank fifth in the GLIAC in field goal percentage, hitting 42.2 percent of their attempts.

Individually, senior forward Kayla Brown ranks ninth with a 51.7 percent shooting clip.

Getting on the Glass

The Oilers are averaging 13.1 offensive rebounds per game, the fifth best total in the GLIAC.

Freebies

The Oilers are hitting 75.1 percent of their free throw attempts on the season, the fifth best mark in the GLIAC.

Individually, sophomore forward Lacey Kessler leads the GLIAC and ranks fifth nationally with a 95.7 percent shooting clip from the line.

1,000-Point Club

Senior forward Kayla Brown will look to become the 19th member of the Oilers 1,000-point club this year.

Brown has scored 905 points during her career and has also added 341 rebounds during her tenure with the program.

Teammate Laura Piehl was the last Oilers player to crack the 1,000-point plateau as she has racked up 1,262 career points and will hope to add to her total this season.

Reaching the 90-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored 90 or more points 62 times since the 1978-79 season and sport a 61-1 (.984) record in those games.

Their only loss came at the hands of Wilmington, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 110-98 in 1985.

Preseason GLIAC Poll

The University of Findlay women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division as the league office announced their annual preseason poll on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The Oilers, who finished last season with a 15-12 record, received 121 votes in the poll and trailed Tiffin University (140) and Ashland University (184) in the South Division.  The Eagles received all 23 first place votes in the poll, which was based on votes by members of the media.

Ferris State University was tabbed as the favorite to win the North Division after receiving 15 first place votes and a total of 174 votes overall.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Senior forward Kayla Brown was honored as a preseason first team all-conference pick.

Brown earned second team honors last year as a junior after averaging a team-high 12.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.  She also recorded 2.2 steals per game and drained 46 three pointers. 

Brown has scored 754 points during her career and has added 317 rebounds.  She will look to become the Oilers 19th member of the 1,000-point club in her final year with the program.

Winning GLIAC South Division Titles

The Oilers have won two out the last three GLIAC South Division titles (2009-10, 2010-11) and as a program, have captured championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010 and 2011.

GLIAC Tournament

The Oilers have appeared in the GLIAC Tournament four times in their history.  During the 2009-10 campaign, the Oilers won a GLIAC Tournament game for the first time in school history, defeating Hillsdale College 66-62 to advance to the second round.
