Oilers to Face #1 Ashland and Lake Erie this Week

The Oilers women's basketball team will be on the road for two conference games this week beginning on Thursday when they face #1 Ashland University at 7:30 p.m.  They will then face Lake Erie College on Saturday at 3 p.m.

The Series

The Oilers trail 20-15 in the all-time series against Ashland dating back to the 1990-91 campaign when the Eagles were victorious by a score of 58-42.

Ashland won both games last year, 76-52 in Ashland and 71-55 in Findlay.

Clare Aubry and Lacey Kessler each scored ten points apiece in the loss at Ashland while Kaitlyn Nelson had 14 points and six boards during the Oilers loss at home.

The Oilers sport a 10-1 record against the Storm dating back to the 1988-89 campaign when Findlay won by a score of 106-54.

The two programs split their two-game set last year as the Oilers came away with a 71-69 win in Painesville before falling 70-62 at home.

Tai Dotson had 15 points in the win while Aubry recorded 18 points in the loss.

The University of Findlay

The University of Findlay women's basketball team earned a 67-61 win over Tiffin University on Saturday, Jan. 12 in Croy Gymnasium to run their record to 11-3 on the year.

The Oilers, who improved to 8-2 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) with the victory, found themselves down by a score of 58-54 with 3:20 remaining in the game.  Senior forward Kayla Brown then cut the lead to one with a three pointer and made two free throws after a turnover by the Dragons to make the score 59-58 in favor of Findlay with 2:42 left.

After a few failed possessions by both teams, senior guard Laura Peihl converted a layup off of a nice feed from junior guard Ashley Andrews to give the Oilers a 61-58 advantage with under two minutes remaining in the contest.  Senior guard Kendra Elam then iced the game at the free throw line, converting 5-of-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch.

Brown led the team with 13 points while senior forward Tai Dotson had 11 points and seven rebounds.  Elam finished with nine points, all from the free throw line, while Piehl and junior guard Karli Beasley scored seven points.

Freshman forward Margaret Wuebker set a new career-high with ten rebounds.

#1 Ashland University

The Eagles are the top-ranked team in the nation and have achieved a 17-0 record to date with a 10-0 mark in the GLIAC.

Kari Daugherty, who was named the NCAA Division II National Player of the Year last year as a junior, leads the team with averages of 23.2 points, 15.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.7 steals per game.

Daiva Gerbec, who was named all-region two years ago before sitting out last year with an injury, is averaging 13.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game.

The Storm are 3-9 on the year with a 1-8 record in conference play.  Ashar Harris leads the team and is averaging 16.0 points and 12.3 rebounds per game.

1,000-Point Club

Senior forward Kayla Brown became the 19th member of the Oilers 1,000-point club in the Oilers 67-37 win over Ohio Dominican on Jan. 10 in Croy Gymnasium.

Brown currently ranks 19th all-time with 1,016 career points and has also added 370 rebounds and 162 steals during her tenure with the program.

Teammate Laura Piehl is also a member of the Oilers 1,000-point club and has racked up 1,283 career points, which ranks seventh all-time at Findlay.

Piehl has also recorded 452 rebounds, 274 assists and 119 steals during her time with the Oilers.

Lighting Up the Scoreboard

Senior forward Kayla Brown has been scoring in bunches this season, averaging 19.0 points per game.  Her points per game average is the third best in the GLIAC and is enabling Findlay to average 73.0 points per outing, the second best mark in the league.

Nationally, Brown ranks 22nd in points per game average.

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 13.7 steals per game, the best total in the GLIAC and the 11th best mark in the nation. 

Individually, senior forward Kayla Brown ranks first in the GLIAC with 3.0 steals per game while sophomore forward Lacey Kessler is 12th with 1.8 steals per contest.

Forcing Turnovers

The Oilers are forcing 24.5 turnovers per game, the best total in the GLIAC.

Triple Your Pleasure

Senior forward Kayla Brown ranks second in the conference in three point shooting, making 2.4 per game.  She has connected on 37.1 percent (33-of-89) of her attempts thus far, which ranks 11th in the GLIAC.

The Oilers are hitting 31.8 percent of their triple tries this season, the sixth best mark in the league.

Shooting Range

The Oilers rank fourth in the GLIAC in field goal percentage, hitting 41.8 percent of their attempts.

Individually, senior forward Kayla Brown ranks eighth with a 50.3 percent shooting clip.

Freebies

The Oilers are hitting 72.1 percent of their free throw attempts on the season, the seventh best mark in the GLIAC.

Individually, junior guard Ashley Andrews ranks 13th with an 82.1 percent shooting clip from the line.

Getting on the Glass

The Oilers are averaging 14.0 offensive rebounds per game, the third best total in the GLIAC.

Senior forward Tai Dotson is grabbing 3.1 offensive rebounds per game, the seventh best total in the GLIAC.

Dropping Dimes

The Oilers rank third in the GLIAC in assists per game with 14.5 per game.

Stealing Records

The Oilers set a new school record with 28 steals in their 67-37 win over Ohio Dominican on Jan. 10.  The previous record of 27 was set in a 75-57 victory over Walsh on Jan. 5, 1995. 

Reaching the 90-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored 90 or more points 63 times since the 1978-79 season and sport a 62-1 (.984) record in those games.

Their only loss came at the hands of Wilmington, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 110-98 in 1985.

Preseason GLIAC Poll

The University of Findlay women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division as the league office announced their annual preseason poll on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The Oilers, who finished last season with a 15-12 record, received 121 votes in the poll and trailed Tiffin University (140) and Ashland University (184) in the South Division.  The Eagles received all 23 first place votes in the poll, which was based on votes by members of the media.

Ferris State University was tabbed as the favorite to win the North Division after receiving 15 first place votes and a total of 174 votes overall.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Senior forward Kayla Brown was honored as a preseason first team all-conference pick.

Brown earned second team honors last year as a junior after averaging a team-high 12.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.  She also recorded 2.2 steals per game and drained 46 three pointers. 

Brown has scored 754 points during her career and has added 317 rebounds.  She will look to become the Oilers 19th member of the 1,000-point club in her final year with the program.

Winning GLIAC South Division Titles

The Oilers have won two out the last three GLIAC South Division titles (2009-10, 2010-11) and as a program, have captured championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010 and 2011.

GLIAC Tournament

The Oilers have appeared in the GLIAC Tournament four times in their history.  During the 2009-10 campaign, the Oilers won a GLIAC Tournament game for the first time in school history, defeating Hillsdale College 66-62 to advance to the second round.
