Oilers Head to Hillsdale on Saturday

The Oilers women's basketball team will be on the road at Hillsdale College on Saturday, Feb. 2.  The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. in Hillsdale, Mich.

The Series

The Oilers currently trail 18-15 in the all-time series against Hillsdale dating back to the 1985-86 campaign when Findlay came out on top by a score of 74-47.

Last season both teams earned a victory on their home floor as Hillsdale came away with a 71-57 win before falling 63-48 to Findlay in Croy Gymnasium.

Clare Aubry led the team with 15 points while Kayla Brown contributed 13 points and seven rebounds in the Oilers loss at Hillsdale.

Ashley Andrews also broke into double figures as she contributed ten points during the loss.

Lacey Kessler came off the bench to score a game-high 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting while Tai Dotson also came off the pine to contribute ten points and five rebounds in the Oilers win at home.

The University of Findlay

The University of Findlay women's basketball team defeated Malone University on Saturday, Jan. 26 by a score of 67-55 in Croy Gymnasium.

The Oilers, who improved to 14-4 on the year with an 11-3 record in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), shot 39.7 percent (23-of-58) from the floor and canned 9-of-24 (37.5%) shots from behind the three point line.  They also forced the Pioneers into 32 turnovers, which led to 18 steals and 29 points for the Oilers.

Kayla Brown led the team with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting.  She also tied a career-high with six steals and added three rebounds and three assists.

Karli Beasley added nine points while Kaleigh Kenny and Tai Dotson scored eight points apiece.

Laura Piehl and Alyssa Grevenkamp came off the bench to score seven points apiece while Ashley Andrews had seven points, four steals, three assists and a pair of rebounds.

Hillsdale College

The Chargers are 7-10 on the season with a 4-10 record in GLIAC play.  Megan Fogt leads the team and is averaging a double-double with 14.9 points and 10.1 rebounds per game.  She is also contributing 1.6 steals and 1.1 blocks per contest.

1,000-Point Club

Senior forward Kayla Brown became the 19th member of the Oilers 1,000-point club in the Oilers 67-37 win over Ohio Dominican on Jan. 10 in Croy Gymnasium.

Brown currently ranks 15th all-time with 1,072 career points and has also added 380 rebounds and 170 steals during her tenure with the program.

Brown is currently chasing Monica Higgins, who scored 1,083 points from 1984-87, for 14th place on the scoring list.

Teammate Laura Piehl is also a member of the Oilers 1,000-point club and has racked up 1,296 career points, which ranks sixth all-time at Findlay.

Piehl has also recorded 461 rebounds, 279 assists and 119 steals during her time with the Oilers.

Piehl is chasing Nicole Clever for fifth place all-time on the Oilers scoring list.  Clever racked up 1,331 career points from 1993-95.

Lighting Up the Scoreboard

Senior forward Kayla Brown has been scoring in bunches this season, averaging 17.9 points per game.  Her points per game average is the third best in the GLIAC and is enabling Findlay to average 70.9 points per outing, the third best mark in the league.

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 12.9 steals per game, the best total in the GLIAC and the 14th best mark in the nation. 

Individually, senior forward Kayla Brown ranks first in the GLIAC with 2.8 steals per game while sophomore forward Lacey Kessler is 15th with 1.7 steals per contest.

Forcing Turnovers

The Oilers are forcing 24.0 turnovers per game, the best total in the GLIAC.

They also have a +5.3 advantage in turnover margin, the 24th best mark in the nation.

Triple Your Pleasure

Senior forward Kayla Brown ranks third in the conference in three point shooting, making 2.2 per game.  She has connected on 36.8 percent (39-of-106) of her attempts thus far, which ranks 11th in the GLIAC.

The Oilers are hitting 31.2 percent of their triple tries this season, the fifth best mark in the league.

Shooting Range

The Oilers rank fourth in the GLIAC in field goal percentage, hitting 41.4 percent of their attempts.

Senior forwards Tai Dotson (53.5%) and Kayla Brown (50.6%) rank fourth and tenth, respectively, in the GLIAC.

Freebies

The Oilers have made 309 free throws this season, the second best mark in the GLIAC.  They are hitting 70.9 percent of their attempts, which is the tenth best mark in the conference.

Dropping Dimes

The Oilers rank third in the GLIAC in assists per game with 14.2 per game.

Stealing Records

The Oilers set a new school record with 28 steals in their 67-37 win over Ohio Dominican on Jan. 10.  The previous record of 27 was set in a 75-57 victory over Walsh on Jan. 5, 1995. 

Reaching the 90-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored 90 or more points 63 times since the 1978-79 season and sport a 62-1 (.984) record in those games.

Their only loss came at the hands of Wilmington, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 110-98 in 1985.

Preseason GLIAC Poll

The University of Findlay women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division as the league office announced their annual preseason poll on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The Oilers, who finished last season with a 15-12 record, received 121 votes in the poll and trailed Tiffin University (140) and Ashland University (184) in the South Division.  The Eagles received all 23 first place votes in the poll, which was based on votes by members of the media.

Ferris State University was tabbed as the favorite to win the North Division after receiving 15 first place votes and a total of 174 votes overall.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Senior forward Kayla Brown was honored as a preseason first team all-conference pick.

Brown earned second team honors last year as a junior after averaging a team-high 12.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.  She also recorded 2.2 steals per game and drained 46 three pointers. 

Brown has scored 754 points during her career and has added 317 rebounds.  She will look to become the Oilers 19th member of the 1,000-point club in her final year with the program.

Winning GLIAC South Division Titles

The Oilers have won two out the last three GLIAC South Division titles (2009-10, 2010-11) and as a program, have captured championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010 and 2011.

GLIAC Tournament

The Oilers have appeared in the GLIAC Tournament four times in their history.  During the 2009-10 campaign, the Oilers won a GLIAC Tournament game for the first time in school history, defeating Hillsdale College 66-62 to advance to the second round.
