Oilers Host #1 Eagles and Storm this Week

The Oilers women's basketball team will be at home for a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division contests this week.  The Oilers will host #1 Ashland University on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 8 p.m. before battling Lake Erie College on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m.

Special Events

Thursday's men's and women's games against Ashland will be Pink Day, an effort to raise awareness for breast cancer.  Fans who wear pink to the game will receive $1 off their price of admission. 

The 2013 Chili Cook-Off will be held in the Koehler Fitness and Recreation Complex after Saturday's basketball games against Lake Erie.  The event is sponsored by Cancer Patient Services and those who purchase a ticket to the basketball games, will receive free admission to the Chili Cook-Off.

The Series

The Oilers trail 21-15 in the all-time series against Ashland dating back to the 1990-91 campaign when the Eagles were victorious by a score of 58-42.

The Eagles roughed the Oilers up earlier this year in Ashland as they won 72-41.  Much of the damage was done in the first five minutes of the game as Ashland ran out to a 20-0 lead.

The Oilers shot 26.7 percent (16-of-60) from the floor and hit only 4-of-23 (17.4%) attempts from behind the three point line.

The Eagles connected on 47.3 percent (26-of-55) of their field goal attempts and drained 12-of-27 (44.4%) three point attempts in the win.

The Oilers were led by Kayla Brown and Alyssa Grevenkamp, who each scored eight points.

Lindsay Tenyak scored 16 points for Ashland while Daiva Gerbec contributed 12 points and 19 boards.

The Oilers sport an 11-1 record against the Storm dating back to the 1988-89 campaign when Findlay won by a score of 106-54.

Earlier this season the Oilers came away with a 79-48 win over Lake Erie in Painesville, Ohio.

Kayla Brown and Tai Dotson led the way as they each scored 17 points in the victory.  Brown hit 6-of-10 shots from the field while Dotson meanwhile hit 5-of-6 attempts from the field and canned 7-of-9 shot attempts from the charity stripe, also adding five boards in the game.

Karli Beasley added ten points as 12 Findlay players scored in the victory.

The Oilers dominated from beginning to end as they shot 48.9 percent (23-of-47) from the floor and held the Storm to a mere 31.9 percent (15-of-47) shooting clip.  Findlay also forced 26 turnovers and registered 12 steals in the win.

The University of Findlay

The Oilers won their sixth straight game with a 62-44 victory over Tiffin University on Saturday, Feb. 9 in Tiffin, Ohio.  The win gave the Oilers a 17-4 record on the season with a 14-3 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).  It was also the 100th victory for head coach Kate Cummings at Findlay.

The Oilers shot 36.4 percent (20-of-55) from the floor and forced 23 turnovers in the game.  The Oilers bench also played a key role in the victory as they accumulated 34 of the Oilers 62 points.

Kayla Brown led the charge with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting.

Karli Beasley led the Oilers bench output with ten points and three rebounds.  Lacey Kessler added eight points and three boards while Andrea Kras had a career-high eight points in ten minutes of action.

Laura Piehl also played well for Findlay off the pine, scoring seven points on 2-of-5 shooting.

The Dragons connected on only 31.9 percent (15-of-47) of their shots and were led by Jessica Harris and Stephanie Kelly, who each scored eight points in the game.

#1 Ashland University

The Eagles have been steamrolling their opponents thus far, beating teams by an average of 25.1 points per game.  They are currently undefeated with a 24-0 record, which features a 17-0 GLIAC record.

Kari Daugherty leads the team with averages of 22.5 points and 15.0 rebounds per game while Daiva Gerbec is contributing 14.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per contest.

Taylor Woods and Alyssa Miller are also averaging in double figures on a nightly basis, chipping in 11.4 and 10.8 points per game, respectively.

The Storm are 3-17 on the year with a 1-16 record in conference play.  Ashar Harris leads the team with averages of 16.0 points and 12.3 rebounds per game.

1,000-Point Club

Senior forward Kayla Brown became the 19th member of the Oilers 1,000-point club in the Oilers 67-37 win over Ohio Dominican on Jan. 10 in Croy Gymnasium.

Brown currently ranks 13th all-time with 1,121 career points and has also added 391 rebounds and 176 steals during her tenure with the program.

Brown is currently chasing Trisha McDaniel, who scored 1,139 points from 1997-2000, for 12th place on the scoring list.

Teammate Laura Piehl is also a member of the Oilers 1,000-point club and has racked up 1,314 career points, which ranks sixth all-time at Findlay.

Piehl has also recorded 472 rebounds, 280 assists and 123 steals during her time with the Oilers.

Piehl is chasing Nicole Clever for fifth place all-time on the Oilers scoring list.  Clever racked up 1,331 career points from 1993-95.

Lighting Up the Scoreboard

Senior forward Kayla Brown has been scoring in bunches this season, averaging 17.7 points per game.  Her points per game average is the fourth best in the GLIAC and is enabling Findlay to average 70.1 points per outing, the fourth best mark in the league.

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 12.8 steals per game, the best total in the GLIAC and the 12th best mark in the nation. 

Individually, senior forward Kayla Brown ranks first in the GLIAC with 2.7 steals per game while sophomore forward Lacey Kessler is 16th with 1.7 steals per contest.

Forcing Turnovers

The Oilers are forcing 23.8 turnovers per game, the best total in the GLIAC.

They also have a +5.9 advantage in turnover margin, the 16th best mark in the nation.

Triple Your Pleasure

Senior forward Kayla Brown ranks third in the conference in three point shooting, making 2.1 per game.  She has connected on 36.1 percent (44-of-122) of her attempts thus far, which ranks 11th in the GLIAC.

The Oilers are hitting 30.7 percent of their triple tries this season, the seventh best mark in the league.  They have also splashed down 121 triples on the year, which ranks third in the GLIAC.

Shooting Range

The Oilers rank fifth in the GLIAC in field goal percentage, hitting 41.2 percent of their attempts.

Senior forwards Tai Dotson (52.2%) and Kayla Brown (50.4%) rank ninth and tenth, respectively, in the GLIAC.

Freebies

The Oilers have made 360 free throws this season, the second best mark in the GLIAC. 

Dropping Dimes

The Oilers rank third in the GLIAC in assists per game with 14.2 per game.

Moving on Up

Senior forward Kayla Brown has drained 118 three pointers in her career, the fifth best total ever at Findlay.

Brown is currently chasing Tiffany Stewart for fourth place, who drained 142 triples from 2000-03.

The Mt. Blanchard, Ohio native is also ranked fifth all-time in career three point attempts with 324.  She trails Stewart for fourth place, who attempted 384 triples.

The Great Heist

Senior forward Kayla Brown ranks sixth all-time at Findlay in steals with 176.  She trails Nicole Clever in the all-time rankings, who came away with 203 steals from 1993-95.

GLIAC South Division Player of the Week

Senior forward Kayla Brown was named the GLIAC South Division Player of the Week on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Brown led the Oilers to a 76-70 win at Hillsdale on Feb. 2 with 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting.  The Mt. Blanchard, Ohio native canned 4-of-9 three point attempts and also added four rebounds and a pair of steals.

Stealing Records

The Oilers set a new school record with 28 steals in their 67-37 win over Ohio Dominican on Jan. 10.  The previous record of 27 was set in a 75-57 victory over Walsh on Jan. 5, 1995. 

Reaching the 90-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored 90 or more points 63 times since the 1978-79 season and sport a 62-1 (.984) record in those games.

Their only loss came at the hands of Wilmington, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 110-98 in 1985.

Preseason GLIAC Poll

The University of Findlay women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division as the league office announced their annual preseason poll on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The Oilers, who finished last season with a 15-12 record, received 121 votes in the poll and trailed Tiffin University (140) and Ashland University (184) in the South Division.  The Eagles received all 23 first place votes in the poll, which was based on votes by members of the media.

Ferris State University was tabbed as the favorite to win the North Division after receiving 15 first place votes and a total of 174 votes overall.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Senior forward Kayla Brown was honored as a preseason first team all-conference pick.

Brown earned second team honors last year as a junior after averaging a team-high 12.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.  She also recorded 2.2 steals per game and drained 46 three pointers. 

Winning GLIAC South Division Titles

The Oilers have won two out the last three GLIAC South Division titles (2009-10, 2010-11) and as a program, have captured championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010 and 2011.

GLIAC Tournament

The Oilers have appeared in the GLIAC Tournament four times in their history.  During the 2009-10 campaign, the Oilers won a GLIAC Tournament game for the first time in school history, defeating Hillsdale College 66-62 to advance to the second round.
