Oiler Ladies Close Out Regular Season Against Hillsdale

The Oilers, ranked 19th nationally, will host Hillsdale College in their final regular season home game on Saturday, March 2.  The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division battle is scheduled to tip at 3 p.m. in Croy Gymnasium.

Senior Day

The Oilers game against Hillsdale will be senior day.  The Oilers will honor Laura Piehl, Kayla Brown, Kendra Elam and Tai Dotson before the start of the men's game at 1 p.m.

The Series

The Oilers currently trail 18-16 in the all-time series against Hillsdale dating back to the 1985-86 campaign when Findlay came out on top by a score of 74-47.

The Oilers won the first meeting between the two programs this season by a score of 76-70 in Hillsdale behind 22 points from Kayla Brown.

Tai Dotson also had a standout game for Findlay as she contributed nine points and nine rebounds.

Ashley Andrews recorded nine points and four steals while Karli Beasley came off the bench to give the Oilers a spark with eight points, hitting 2-of-5 attempts from behind the three point line.

The Oilers shot 41 percent (25-of-61) from the floor and grabbed 22 offensive rebounds in the win.  They held a 39-28 advantage on the boards in the game and also forced 21 turnovers, which allowed the Oilers to rack up 13 steals.

The University of Findlay

The University of Findlay women's basketball team captured their tenth straight victory with a 62-51 win over Malone University on Saturday, Feb. 23 in Canton, Ohio.

The Oilers, who are now 21-4 on the year with an 18-3 record in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), shot 51.1 percent (23-of-45) from the field and received a game-high 21 points from Kayla Brown.

Brown hit 10-of-15 shots from the floor and also added six rebounds and three steals.

Tai Dotson also reached double figures with 11 points, hitting all five of her field goal attempts, to go along with nine rebounds.

Kendra Elam added nine points, Karli Beasley had seven and Kristin Klausing stuffed the stat sheet with two points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal off the bench.

The Oilers also held a 32-23 advantage on the boards and accumulated 11 steals in the victory.

The Chargers are 11-13 on the year with an 8-13 record in GLIAC play.  Megan Foyt is averaging 14.5 points and 10.4 rebounds per game to lead the team.

Roster

1,000-Point Club

Senior forward Kayla Brown became the 19th member of the Oilers 1,000-point club in the Oilers 67-37 win over Ohio Dominican on Jan. 10 in Croy Gymnasium.

Brown currently ranks 12th all-time with 1,189 career points and has also added 403 rebounds and 183 steals during her tenure with the program.

Brown is currently chasing Tammy Lorton, who scored 1,195 points from 1989-92, for 11th place on the scoring list.

Teammate Laura Piehl is also a member of the Oilers 1,000-point club and has racked up 1,333 career points, which ranks fifth all-time at Findlay.

Piehl has also recorded 487 rebounds, 285 assists and 132 steals during her time with the Oilers.

Piehl is chasing Trisha Lauck for fourth place all-time on the Oilers scoring list.  Lauck racked up 1,337 career points from 1996-99.

Nationally Ranked

The Oilers are ranked 19th in the nation, the first time they have ever cracked the top-25 at the NCAA Division II level.

Lighting Up the Scoreboard

Senior forward Kayla Brown has been scoring in bunches this season, averaging 17.4 points per game.  Her points per game average is the fourth best in the GLIAC and is enabling Findlay to average 70.8 points per outing, the second best mark in the league.

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 13.2 steals per game, the best total in the GLIAC and the 11th best mark in the nation. 

Individually, senior forward Kayla Brown ranks second in the GLIAC with 2.5 steals per game while sophomore forward Lacey Kessler is 16th with 1.6 steals per contest.

Forcing Turnovers

The Oilers are forcing 23.8 turnovers per game, the best total in the GLIAC. They also have a +5.8 advantage in turnover margin, the 17th best mark in the nation.

Triple Your Pleasure

Senior forward Kayla Brown ranks third in the conference in three point shooting, making 2.0 per game.  She has connected on 35.7 percent (51-of-143) of her attempts thus far, which ranks 12th in the GLIAC.

The Oilers have also splashed down 142 triples on the year, which ranks fourth in the GLIAC.

Shooting Range

The Oilers rank second in the GLIAC in field goal percentage, hitting 42.2 percent of their attempts.

Senior forwards Tai Dotson (54.5%) and Kayla Brown (51.1%) rank fourth and eighth, respectively, in the GLIAC.

Freebies

The Oilers have made 425 free throws this season, the second best mark in the GLIAC. 

Dropping Dimes

The Oilers rank third in the GLIAC in assists per game with 14.5 per game.

Defense Wins Championships

The Oilers are ranked third in the GLIAC in points allowed, surrendering only 58.0 points per game to their opposition.

Moving on Up

Senior forward Kayla Brown has drained 125 three pointers in her career, the fifth best total ever at Findlay.  She is currently chasing Tiffany Stewart for fourth place, who drained 142 triples from 2000-03.

The Mt. Blanchard, Ohio native is also ranked fifth all-time in career three point attempts with 345.  She trails Stewart for fourth place, who attempted 384 triples.

The Great Heist

Senior forward Kayla Brown ranks sixth all-time at Findlay in steals with 183.  She trails Nicole Clever in the all-time rankings, who came away with 203 steals from 1993-95.

GLIAC South Division Player of the Week

Senior forward Kayla Brown was named the GLIAC South Division Player of the Week on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Brown led the Oilers to a 76-70 win at Hillsdale on Feb. 2 with 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting.  The Mt. Blanchard, Ohio native canned 4-of-9 three point attempts and also added four rebounds and a pair of steals.

Stealing Records

The Oilers set a new school record with 28 steals in their 67-37 win over Ohio Dominican on Jan. 10.  The previous record of 27 was set in a 75-57 victory over Walsh on Jan. 5, 1995. 

Reaching the 90-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored 90 or more points 64 times since the 1978-79 season and sport a 63-1 (.984) record in those games.

Their only loss came at the hands of Wilmington, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 110-98 in 1985.

Preseason GLIAC Poll

The University of Findlay women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division as the league office announced their annual preseason poll on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The Oilers, who finished last season with a 15-12 record, received 121 votes in the poll and trailed Tiffin University (140) and Ashland University (184) in the South Division.  The Eagles received all 23 first place votes in the poll, which was based on votes by members of the media.

Ferris State University was tabbed as the favorite to win the North Division after receiving 15 first place votes and a total of 174 votes overall.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Senior forward Kayla Brown was honored as a preseason first team all-conference pick.

Brown earned second team honors last year as a junior after averaging a team-high 12.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.  She also recorded 2.2 steals per game and drained 46 three pointers. 

Winning GLIAC South Division Titles

The Oilers have won two out the last three GLIAC South Division titles (2009-10, 2010-11) and as a program, have captured championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010 and 2011.

GLIAC Tournament

The Oilers have appeared in the GLIAC Tournament four times in their history.  During the 2009-10 campaign, the Oilers won a GLIAC Tournament game for the first time in school history, defeating Hillsdale College 66-62 to advance to the second round.
