#18 Oilers Face Wayne State in NCAA Tournament

The Oilers, ranked 18th nationally, will face Wayne State University in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament on Friday, March 15.  The contest is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. in Ashland, Ohio.

The Series

The Oilers hold a 19-15 advantage in the all-time series against Wayne State dating back to the 1990-91 campaign when they came out on the winning end by a score of 57-48.

Findlay secured a 90-84 win over the Warriors in overtime on Jan. 5 in Detroit, Mich. behind 25 points from Kayla Brown.  Brown hit 7-of-17 shot attempts and also hit 10-of-11 attempts from the free throw line in the game.

Tai Dotson added a double-double with 17 points and ten rebounds while Lacey Kessler contributed 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals off the bench.

The Oilers then came away with a 67-60 win over the Warriors on March 9 in the GLIAC Tournament behind 23 points from Brown. 

Karli Beasley came off the bench to score 12 while Kristin Klausing had six assists and five steals.

The University of Findlay

The University of Findlay women's basketball team fell 68-49 to #2 Ashland University in the finals of the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament on March 10 in Ashland, Ohio.

The Oilers fell behind by a score of 40-26 at the half and could never recover.  They shot 30.6 percent (15-of-49) while the Eagles hit on 40.7 percent of their shots.

Kayla Brown scored 13 points and added four steals in the win. 

She was named to the all-tournament team as well.

Ashley Andrews and Kendra Elam each scored nine points while Margaret Wuebker had eight points and nine rebounds.

Daiva Gerbec led the Eagles with 18 points and ten boards while Kari Daugherty, the 2013 GLIAC Player of the Year, had 17 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Wayne State University

The Warriors are 20-8 on the year and have been led by Talisha Bridges, who is averaging 15.4 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.

Juanita Cochran is a force in the paint as well with averages of 11.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game.

1,000-Point Club

Senior forward Kayla Brown became the 19th member of the Oilers 1,000-point club in the Oilers 67-37 win over Ohio Dominican on Jan. 10 in Croy Gymnasium.

Brown currently ranks eighth all-time with 1,265 career points and has also added 414 rebounds and 197 steals during her tenure with the program.

Brown is currently chasing Janet Schilling, who scored 1,294 points from 1983-86, for seventh place on the scoring list.

Teammate Laura Piehl is also a member of the Oilers 1,000-point club and has racked up 1,355 career points, which ranks fourth all-time at Findlay.

Piehl has also recorded 466 rebounds, 291 assists and 135 steals during her time with the Oilers.

Piehl is chasing Audra Mihalic for third place all-time on the Oilers scoring list.  Mihalic racked up 1,398 career points from 2007-10.

All-GLIAC

Senior forward Kayla Brown was named first team all-conference on March 9.  Brown leads the team in scoring, three point shooting and steals.  She was named second team all-conference last year for the Oilers.

In addition, senior forward Tai Dotson captured second team all-conference honors while senior guard Kendra Elam earned a spot on the all-defensive team.

GLIAC Tournament Team

The Oilers finished as the runner-up in the GLIAC Tournament this season and senior forward Kayla Brown earned a spot on the all-tournament team after averaging 13.7 points, 3.7 steals and 2.7 rebounds per game.

Nationally Ranked

The Oilers are ranked 18th in the nation, the fourth week in a row of being ranked in the top-25.  The Oilers have never been ranked at the NCAA Division II level until this season.

Lighting Up the Scoreboard

Senior forward Kayla Brown has been scoring in bunches this season, averaging 17.6 points per game.  Her points per game average is the fourth best in the GLIAC and is enabling Findlay to average 70.0 points per outing, the second best mark in the league.

Brown has racked up 511 points this year, the third best single season mark in the history of the program.  She trails Jenni McGraw, who scored 591 points during the 1995-96 campaign, for second place in the record book.

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 12.9 steals per game, the best total in the GLIAC and the 12th best mark in the nation. 

Individually, senior forward Kayla Brown leads the GLIAC with 2.7 steals per game while sophomore forward Lacey Kessler is 18th with 1.5 steals per contest.

Forcing Turnovers

The Oilers are forcing 23.2 turnovers per game, the best total in the GLIAC. They also have a +5.2 advantage in turnover margin, the 17th best mark in the nation.

Triple Your Pleasure

Senior forward Kayla Brown ranks third in the conference in three point shooting, making 2.2 per game. 

Brown has made 63 triples this season and is closing in on setting the record for most made three pointers in a season.  The record of 68 is held by Maggie Gompers (2008-09).

The Oilers have also splashed down 170 triples on the year, which ranks third in the GLIAC.

Shooting Range

The Oilers rank second in the GLIAC in field goal percentage, hitting 42.0 percent of their attempts.  Senior forwards Tai Dotson (54.8%) and Kayla Brown (51.6%) rank third and sixth, respectively, in the GLIAC.

Dropping Dimes

The Oilers rank third in the GLIAC with 14.5 assists per game.

Defense Wins Championships

The Oilers are ranked third in the GLIAC in points allowed, surrendering only 58.4 points per game to their opposition.

Freebies

The Oilers have made 489 free throws this season, the best mark in the GLIAC.

Moving on Up

Senior forward Kayla Brown has drained 137 three pointers in her career, the fifth best total ever at Findlay.  She is currently chasing Tiffany Stewart for fourth place, who drained 142 triples from 2000-03.

The Mt. Blanchard, Ohio native is also ranked fifth all-time in career three point attempts with 372.  She trails Stewart for fourth place, who attempted 384 triples.

The Great Heist

Senior forward Kayla Brown ranks sixth all-time at Findlay in steals with 197.  She trails Nicole Clever in the all-time rankings, who came away with 203 steals from 1993-95.

Stealing Records

The Oilers set a new school record with 28 steals in their 67-37 win over Ohio Dominican on Jan. 10.  The previous record of 27 was set in a 75-57 victory over Walsh on Jan. 5, 1995. 

GLIAC South Division Player of the Week

Senior forward Kayla Brown has been named the GLIAC South Division Player of the Week twice this season.  She earned the honor on Feb. 4 and again on March 4.

Brown received the honor on Feb. 4 after leading the Oilers to a 76-70 win at Hillsdale on Feb. 2 with 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting.  The Mt. Blanchard, Ohio native canned 4-of-9 three point attempts and also added four rebounds and a pair of steals.

She then captured the award on March 4 after posting 35 points on 12-of-18 shooting in a 73-61 win over Hillsdale at home.  Brown drilled six three pointers in the win and her 35 points were the third highest single game total by an Oilers player in a contest.

Reaching the 90-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored 90 or more points 64 times since the 1978-79 season and sport a 63-1 (.984) record in those games.

Their only loss came at the hands of Wilmington, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 110-98 in 1985.

Preseason GLIAC Poll

The University of Findlay women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division as the league office announced their annual preseason poll on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The Oilers, who finished last season with a 15-12 record, received 121 votes in the poll and trailed Tiffin University (140) and Ashland University (184) in the South Division.  The Eagles received all 23 first place votes in the poll, which was based on votes by members of the media.

Ferris State University was tabbed as the favorite to win the North Division after receiving 15 first place votes and a total of 174 votes overall.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Senior forward Kayla Brown was honored as a preseason first team all-conference pick.

Brown earned second team honors last year as a junior after averaging a team-high 12.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.  She also recorded 2.2 steals per game and drained 46 three pointers. 

Winning GLIAC South Division Titles

The Oilers have won two out the last four GLIAC South Division titles (2009-10, 2010-11) and as a program, have captured championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010 and 2011.
