Oilers Host Huskies and Wildcats in Croy

The University of Findlay women's basketball team will host Michigan Technological University and Northern Michigan University this week in Croy Gymnasium.  The Oilers will play the Huskies on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 6 p.m. and then host the Wildcats on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 1 p.m.

Series Information

The Oilers trail in the all-time series against Michigan Tech by a 14-5 margin dating back to the 1997-98 campaign when the Huskies rolled to a 79-33 win.

Findlay won their only meeting last season by a score of 73-65 in Houghton, Mich. behind 19 points from Kayla Brown.

Ashley Andrews had 14 points, hitting all four of her shots from behind the three point line, while Tai Dotson had ten points and four boards.

The Oilers shot 46.8 percent (22-of-47) from the floor and drained 8-of-12 (66.7%) attempts from behind the three point line.

In comparison, the Oilers held the Huskies to a 38.6 percent (22-of-57) shooting clip in the win.

The Oilers are 2-8 against the Huskies in their last ten meetings.

The Oilers trail 16-4 in the all-time series against Northern Michigan dating back to the 1997-98 campaign when the Wildcats pounded Findlay by a 71-39 margin.

Findlay fell 59-49 against the Wildcats last season in Marquette, Mich.  The Oilers shot only 27.5 percent (14-of-51) from the floor, hitting a mere 2-of-18 (11.1%) attempts from three point range.

The Oilers did force 29 turnovers, but turned the ball over 23 times themselves as a number of players on the squad battled the stomach flu.

Lacey Kessler led the Oilers with 13 points while Kayla Brown chipped in 12 points of her own.

Lauren Gruber led the Wildcats with 16 points as Northern Michigan connected on 8-of-17 (47.1%) shot attempts from behind the three point line.

The Oilers have posted a 3-7 record against the Wildcats in their last ten meetings.

Findlay

The Oilers outlasted Northwood University to win 84-76 on Saturday, Dec. 7 in Midland, Mich.

The Oilers shot 52.9 percent (27-of-51) from the floor and forced 19 turnovers in the game.

Findlay also shot well from behind the three point line, connecting on 43.8 percent (7-of-16) of their attempts from long range.  They also held a 36-22 advantage in points in the paint and their reserves out-scored Northwood's bench players by a 43-21 margin.

Lacey Kessler led the way with 18 points off the bench in only 14 minutes of playing time.  The Mt. Blanchard, Ohio native hit every shot she took in the game as she was 4-of-4 from the floor, 2-of-2 from three point range and 8-of-8 from the charity stripe.

Margaret Wuebker also reached double figures with 14 points to go along with five rebounds and two steals while Nikki Gunning recorded nine points and three boards.

Kaleigh Kenny contributed eight points and three rebounds while Ciara Geiger had eight points of her own.  Kelsey Lewis played well for the Oilers off the bench, recording six points, a career-high five assists and four rebounds.

Michigan Tech

The Huskies are 3-2 on the year with a 2-0 record in conference play.  They are coming off of an 83-68 win at home over Walsh.

Danielle Blake and Kylie Moxley lead the Huskies and are both scoring 13.0 points per game.

Mackenzie Perttu is also averaging in double figures on a nightly basis, chipping in 11.0 points per outing.

Northern Michigan

The Wildcats are 5-1 on the season with a 2-0 record in conference play and are coming off of a 77-68 win over Malone. 

Alyssa Colla and Abbey DeBruin lead the team with averages of 13.5 and 11.7 points per game, respectively.

Northern Michigan also has five other players averaging more than 7.5 points per game on the season, including Anna Liewen (9.2), Lauren Gruber (8.3), Katelyn Husband (7.5), Nea Makela (7.5) and Annie Rubendunst (7.5).

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 14.0 steals per game this season, the best mark in the GLIAC and the seventh highest total in the nation.  They also lead the league by forcing their opponent into 26.0 turnovers per contest.

Individually, senior guard Ashley Andrews is ranked second in the league with a 2.5 steals per game average while junior guard Kristin Klausing, junior forward Lacey Kessler and senior guard Karli Beasley are all ranked eighth in the GLIAC with 2.0 steals per contest.

Efficient Scoring

Junior forward Lacey Kessler is making the most of her playing time this season and is averaging 12.8 points per game in only 14.8 minutes per contest.

Lighting Up the Scoreboard

Findlay is averaging 83.5 points per game on the year, the best total in the GLIAC.  Their scoring output also ranks 18th nationally. 

Making Shots

The Oilers are shooting 47.2 percent from the field this season, the third best percentage in the GLIAC and the 15th best mark in the nation.

Individually, junior forward Lacey Kessler leads the team and ranks second in the conference with a 70.0 percent shooting clip.

Freebies

Junior forward Lacey Kessler has been doing a lot of damage from the free throw line this season, making 5.0 shot attempts from the charity stripe per game.  Her total makes per contest is the second highest total in the GLIAC.  Kessler is also shooting 87.0 percent from the line this year, the 11th best mark in the league.

As a team, the Oilers are canning 81.3 percent of their shots from the charity stripe, the second best mark in the GLIAC.  The percentage of makes at the free throw line is also the fourth highest mark in all of NCAA DII basketball.

Swatting Shots

Sophomore forward Kelsey Lewis ranks eighth in the league in blocked shots per game, swatting an average of 1.2 per contest.

Passing the Rock

The Oilers lead the conference in assists per game with 17.8 per contest.  Junior guard Kristin Klausing leads the squad and is averaging 3.5 assists per game, the eighth best mark in the GLIAC.

Raining 3's

The Oilers are shooting 38.5 percent (37-of-96) from behind the three point line this season, the third best shooting clip in the GLIAC.  They are also connecting on 9.3 three pointers per game, which is the highest total in the GLIAC.  The total also ranks seventh nationally.

Senior guard Ashley Andrews is canning 55.6 percent of her attempts from behind the three point line, the fourth best percentage in the league.

In the Oilers 87-54 win over Northwestern Ohio on Nov. 30, the Oilers canned a season-high 15 three pointers and attempted a school record 42 triple tries.

Getting Buckets

Junior guard Ciara Geiger has proven she has the ability to fill up the basket.  Geiger is in her first season with the Oilers after transferring from Urbana University, where she scored 995 points in her first two collegiate seasons.  The Ft. Wayne, Ind. native has now racked up 1,020 career points in her collegiate career.

Reaching the 90-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored 90 or more points 64 times since the 1978-79 season and sport a 63-1 (.984) record in those games.  Their only loss came at the hands of Wilmington, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 110-98 in 1985.

GLIAC Tournament

The Oilers have appeared in the GLIAC Tournament five times in their history.  They sport a 3-5 record in tournament play.

Winning GLIAC South Division Titles

The Oilers have won two out the last four GLIAC South Division titles (2009-10, 2010-11) and as a program, have captured championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010 and 2011.

Preseason GLIAC Poll

The Oilers were picked to finish second in the South Division of the GLIAC this season according to the annual preseason poll, which was released on Nov. 7.

The Oilers received a total of 177 votes and ten first place votes in the poll.  They fell one vote shy of the top spot in the division, which is held by Ashland University with 178 votes.  The Eagles also received 13 first place votes and are the defending NCAA Division II National Champions.

Findlay finished the 2012-13 campaign with a 24-6 record.  They were ranked 20th in the nation in the final poll and reached the NCAA Division II National Tournament for only the second time in school history.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Junior guard Ciara Geiger, a transfer from Urbana University, and sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker each were honored on the preseason all-conference squads.  Geiger was voted first team all-conference while Wuebker earned a spot on the second team.

Geiger earned all-region honors last year for the Blue Knights after averaging 18.4 points per game.  The Great Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year racked up a total of 995 points during her two years with Urbana and will be counted on to provide offensive firepower for the Oilers this season.

Wuebker made 26 starts for the Oilers last season as a true freshman, averaging 5.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
