Huskies Bite Oilers 69-63 in Croy

The University of Findlay women's basketball team dropped a 69-63 decision to Michigan Technological University on Dec. 12 in Croy Gymnasium.  The loss gives the Oilers a 4-1 record on the season with a 2-1 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

Findlay fell behind by a score of 41-35 at the break, but fought back and took the lead at 61-59 when junior guard Nikki Gunning drained a couple of free throws with 5:17 to play.  A lay-up by sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker then extended the Oilers lead to four at 63-59, but the score would be the Oilers final of the game.

The Oilers went the final 4:37 of the game without a point and the Huskies got a big three pointer from Kerry Gardner to make the score 67-63 in favor of MTU with only 23 ticks left.

The Oilers only managed to connect on a season-low 29.1 percent (16-of-55) of their field goal attempts and were out-rebounded by a 45-35 margin in the loss.  The Huskies meanwhile shot 38.6 percent (22-of-57) from the field and drained 40.9 percent (9-of-22) of their three point opportunities in the game.

Junior forward Lacey Kessler led the way with 15 points and seven rebounds while senior guard Karli Beasley had 12 points, five boards and three steals.

Wuebker and freshman guard Karli Bonar chipped in eight points apiece.

Paige Albi led the Huskies with 15 points and nine rebounds off the bench.

The Oilers will host Northern Michigan University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
