Women's Basketball at ODU and Tiffin this Week

The University of Findlay women's basketball team will be on the road this week to battle Ohio Dominican and Tiffin.  The Oilers will play the Panthers on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and then face the Dragons on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Series Information

The Oilers hold a 14-2 advantage in the all-time series against Ohio Dominican dating back to the 1991-92 campaign when the Panthers claimed a 77-69 victory over Findlay in the NAIA District 22 playoffs.

Findlay came away with two wins over the Panthers last season as they were victorious by a score of 67-37 in Croy Gymnasium and then won 58-45 in Columbus.

Kayla Brown led the Oilers in both wins, scoring 18 points at home and ten points on the road.

The Oilers hold a commanding 38-8 advantage in the all-time series against the Dragons dating back to the 1984-85 campaign when Findlay was victorious by a score of 77-36.

Findlay won both meetings against Tiffin last year, winning 67-61 at home and 62-44 on the road.

Brown scored 13 points in the Oilers win at home while Tai Dotson contributed 11 points and seven boards.  Brown again led the way in the Oilers victory on the road, this time with 17 points.

Findlay

The Oilers dropped an 86-80 decision to Wayne State University on Saturday, Jan. 11 in Croy Gymnasium in their last game. 

The Warriors took a 44-35 at the break, but the Oilers fought back and found themselves down only two points at 82-80 with 29 seconds to play in the game.  The Oilers would get no closer though as they missed four three pointers down the stretch and saw the Warriors converted all four of their free throw attempts.

The Oilers shot 44.8 percent (30-of-67) from the field and forced the Warriors into 23 turnovers.  Findlay also recorded 11 steals and had 18 assists in the loss.

The Warriors meanwhile connected on 66.0 percent (31-of-47) of their shot attempts and held a 33-27 advantage on the boards in the game.

Margaret Wuebker led the Oilers with 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting.  She also added five rebounds and an assists in 24 minutes of action.

Kaleigh Kenny and Ciara Geiger each had 11 points while Ashley Andrews had eight points and five assists.

Karli Beasley and Lacey Kessler each contributed seven points while Kristin Klausing recorded a career-high seven assists.

Ohio Dominican

The Panthers have a 4-8 record on the season with a 1-7 mark in conference play.  They are currently riding a five-game losing streak.

Kacee Hockenberry is the lone Panthers player to average in double figures at 15.5 points per game while Melissa Scherpenberg is giving 9.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest.

Tiffin

The Dragons sport a 5-7 record on the year with a 2-6 mark in GLIAC play.  They have won two straight games and have a 4-2 record at home this year.

Bre Nauman leads the team and is averaging 11.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.  Karli Mast is also averaging in double figures with 10.0 points per contest.

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 11.9 steals per game this season, the best mark in the GLIAC and the 16th highest total in the nation.  They also are also ranked second in the league by forcing their opponent into 21.8 turnovers per contest.

Individually, junior forward Lacey Kessler leads the team and ranks fifth in the GLIAC with 1.9 steals per game.  Senior guards Ashley Andrews and Karli Beasley are tied for sixth in the conference in steals per game at 1.8 per contest.

Making Shots

Sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker has been shooting the ball well and ranks eighth in the league with a 52.4 percent shooting clip. 

Freebies

Junior forward Lacey Kessler has been doing a lot of damage from the free throw line this season, making 4.6 shot attempts from the charity stripe per game.  Her total makes per contest is the sixth highest total in the GLIAC.  Kessler is also shooting 82.3 percent from the line this year, the 13th best mark in the league.

As a team, the Oilers are canning 73.8 percent of their shots from the charity stripe, the fifth best mark in the GLIAC.

Efficient Scoring

The Oilers are averaging 72.3 points per game, the fifth best total in the GLIAC.  They are doing so with a balanced scoring attack, which features eight players averaging 5.9 points per contest or more.

Sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker leads the team with a scoring average of 11.9 points per game while junior forward Lacey Kessler is providing 11.4 points per contest off the bench for Findlay.

Raining 3's

The Oilers are shooting 32.1 percent from behind the three point line this season, the eighth best shooting clip in the GLIAC.  They are also connecting on 7.9 three pointers per game, which is the highest mark in the conference.  The total is also the 19th highest in the nation.

Freshman guard Karli Bonar is connecting on 2.4 triple tries per game this year, which ranks second in the GLIAC. 

Bonar set Ohio state records for most three pointers made in a season (110) and most made triples in a career (350) during her time at Shadyside High School.

In the Oilers 87-54 win over Northwestern Ohio on Nov. 30, the Oilers canned a season-high 15 three pointers and attempted a school record 42 triple tries.

Passing the Rock

The Oilers lead the conference in assists per game with 14.7 per contest.  Junior guard Kristin Klausing is dishing out 2.9 assists per contest to lead the team while senior guard Ashley Andrews ranks second on the squad with 2.5 dimes per game.

Swatting Shots

Sophomore forward Kelsey Lewis ranks 12th in the league in blocked shots per game, swatting an average of 0.9 per contest.

Getting Buckets

Junior guard Ciara Geiger has proven she has the ability to fill up the basket.  Geiger is in her first season with the Oilers after transferring from Urbana University, where she scored 995 points in her first two collegiate seasons.  The Ft. Wayne, Ind. native has now racked up 1,069 career points in her collegiate career.

Reaching the 90-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored 90 or more points 64 times since the 1978-79 season and sport a 63-1 (.984) record in those games.  Their only loss came at the hands of Wilmington, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 110-98 in 1985.

GLIAC Tournament

The Oilers have appeared in the GLIAC Tournament five times in their history.  They sport a 3-5 record in tournament play.

Winning GLIAC South Division Titles

The Oilers have won two out the last four GLIAC South Division titles (2009-10, 2010-11) and as a program, have captured championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010 and 2011.

Preseason GLIAC Poll

The Oilers were picked to finish second in the South Division of the GLIAC this season according to the annual preseason poll, which was released on Nov. 7.

The Oilers received a total of 177 votes and ten first place votes in the poll.  They fell one vote shy of the top spot in the division, which is held by Ashland University with 178 votes.  The Eagles also received 13 first place votes and are the defending NCAA Division II National Champions.

Findlay finished the 2012-13 campaign with a 24-6 record.  They were ranked 20th in the nation in the final poll and reached the NCAA Division II National Tournament for only the second time in school history.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Junior guard Ciara Geiger, a transfer from Urbana University, and sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker each were honored on the preseason all-conference squads.  Geiger was voted first team all-conference while Wuebker earned a spot on the second team.

Geiger earned all-region honors last year for the Blue Knights after averaging 18.4 points per game.  The Great Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year racked up a total of 995 points during her two years with Urbana and will be counted on to provide offensive firepower for the Oilers this season.

Wuebker made 26 starts for the Oilers last season as a true freshman, averaging 5.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
