Oilers to Host Eagles and Storm in Croy

The University of Findlay women's basketball team will be home for two games this week against Ashland University and Lake Erie College.  The Oilers will face the defending national champion Eagles on Thursday (1/23) at 6 p.m. and then take on the Storm this Saturday (1/25) at 1 p.m. in Croy Gymnasium.

Series Information

The Oilers trail 22-16 in the all-time series against Ashland dating back to the 1990-91 campaign when the Eagles were victorious by a score of 58-42.

The two programs met three times last season as the Oilers went 1-2 against the Eagles.  They lost 72-41 in the regular season against Ashland, but came back to defeat the Eagles by a score of 66-51 later in the season.  Ashland was ranked #1 in the nation at the time and the loss was the only one the Eagles would suffer en route to the 2013 NCAA Division II National Championship.  The Eagles also defeated the Oilers by a score of 68-49 in the championship game of the 2013 GLIAC Tournament.

Kayla Brown led the Oilers in all three games and averaged 11.0 points per contest against the Eagles during the 2013-14 campaign.  She scored eight points in their loss at Ashland during the regular season, contributed 13 points in the Oilers win at home over Ashland during the regular season and recorded 12 points in Findlay's loss to the Eagles during the championship game of the GLIAC Tournament.

The Oilers sport a 12-1 record against the Storm dating back to the 1988-89 campaign when Findlay won by a score of 106-54.

The Oilers swept the regular season series with Lake Erie last year, winning 106-54 in Painesville and 75-37 in Findlay.

In the win on the road, Kayla Brown and Tai Dotson led the way as they each scored 17 points in the victory.  Brown hit 6-of-10 shots from the field while Dotson meanwhile hit 5-of-6 attempts from the field and canned 7-of-9 shot attempts from the charity stripe, also adding five boards in the game.

In the win at home, Margaret Wuebker led the team with 12 points on 3-of-4 shooting.  She also tallied six rebounds and connected on 6-of-8 attempts from the free throw line in the win.

Kayla Brown also reached double figures with ten points while Lacey Kessler had nine points, three rebounds, two steals, two assists and one block in 13 minutes off the bench.

Findlay

The Oilers defeated Tiffin University by a score of 69-66 last Saturday to move to 7-7 on the year. 

The Oilers forced 28 Dragon turnovers and came away with 14 steals in the game.  The turnovers led to Findlay having a 32-15 advantage in points off turnovers, which was the deciding factor in the game.

Findlay shot 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the floor while the Dragons connected on 40 percent (20-of-50) of their attempts.

Margaret Wuebker led the team with 14 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks while Karli Bonar contributed 11 points, eight assists and drained 3-of-7 three point attempts.

Ciara Geiger had 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists and four steals in the victory.

Nikki Gunning contributed 12 points and two steals off the bench while Kristin Klausing dished out seven assists to go along with five points and two steals in the contest.

Ashland

The defending NCAA Division II National Champion Eagles are currently 8-6 on the season with a 6-4 record in conference play.

Taylor Woods leads the team and is averaging 17.7 points per contest.

Suzy Wollenhaupt is making a strong case for GLIAC Freshman of the Year honors and is averaging 16.9 points and 7.9 rebounds per game.

Alyssa Miller and McKenzie Miller are also scoring in double figures on the season with averages of 13.2 and 11.4 points per game, respectively.

Lake Erie

The Storm sport a 6-10 record on the year with a 1-9 mark in conference play.  They are currently on a four-game losing streak.

Jackie Murray leads the team with a scoring average of 9.2 points per game while Chrissy Delaney and Kaeding Skelton are averaging 7.6 and 7.4 points per contest, respectively.

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 12.6 steals per game this season, the best mark in the GLIAC and the ninth highest total in the nation.  They also are also ranked second in the league by forcing their opponent into 22.6 turnovers per contest.

Individually, senior guard Ashley Andrews is ranked second in the conference in steals per game with 2.2 per contest while junior forward Lacey Kessler checks in seventh with an average of 1.8 steals per game.

Making Shots

Sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker has been shooting the ball well and ranks eighth in the league with a 52.9 percent shooting clip. 

Efficient Scoring

The Oilers are averaging 72.1 points per game, the fifth best total in the GLIAC.  They are doing so with a balanced scoring attack, which features eight players averaging 5.0 points per contest or more.

Sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker leads the team with a scoring average of 12.2 points per game while junior forward Lacey Kessler is providing 10.5 points per contest off the bench for Findlay.

Taking Care of the Ball

The Oilers are only turning the ball over 14.2 times per game, which is the second best mark in the GLIAC and the 28th best average in the nation.

The Oilers also hold a +8.4 advantage in the turnover column, the best total in the league and the fourth best mark in the nation.

Individually, freshman guard Karli Bonar is leading the GLIAC in assist-to-turnover ratio at 4.2.

Raining 3's

The Oilers also connecting on 7.7 three pointers per game, which is the second highest mark in the conference.  The total is also the 21st highest in the nation.

Freshman guard Karli Bonar is connecting on 2.5 triple tries per game this year, which leads the GLIAC. 

Bonar set Ohio state records for most three pointers made in a season (110) and most made triples in a career (350) during her time at Shadyside High School.

In the Oilers 87-54 win over Northwestern Ohio on Nov. 30, the Oilers canned a season-high 15 three pointers and attempted a school record 42 triple tries.

Swatting Shots

Sophomore forward Kelsey Lewis ranks 11th in the league in blocked shots per game, swatting an average of 0.9 per contest.

Passing the Rock

The Oilers lead the conference in assists per game with 15.1 per contest.  Junior guard Kristin Klausing is dishing out 3.0 assists per contest to lead the team while senior guard Ashley Andrews ranks second on the squad with 2.6 dimes per game.

Getting Buckets

Junior guard Ciara Geiger has proven she has the ability to fill up the basket.  Geiger is in her first season with the Oilers after transferring from Urbana University, where she scored 995 points in her first two collegiate seasons.  The Ft. Wayne, Ind. native has now racked up 1,107 career points in her collegiate career.

Reaching the 90-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored 90 or more points 64 times since the 1978-79 season and sport a 63-1 (.984) record in those games.  Their only loss came at the hands of Wilmington, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 110-98 in 1985.

GLIAC Tournament

The Oilers have appeared in the GLIAC Tournament five times in their history.  They sport a 3-5 record in tournament play.

Winning GLIAC South Division Titles

The Oilers have won two out the last four GLIAC South Division titles (2009-10, 2010-11) and as a program, have captured championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010 and 2011.

Preseason GLIAC Poll

The Oilers were picked to finish second in the South Division of the GLIAC this season according to the annual preseason poll, which was released on Nov. 7.

The Oilers received a total of 177 votes and ten first place votes in the poll.  They fell one vote shy of the top spot in the division, which is held by Ashland University with 178 votes.  The Eagles also received 13 first place votes and are the defending NCAA Division II National Champions.

Findlay finished the 2012-13 campaign with a 24-6 record.  They were ranked 20th in the nation in the final poll and reached the NCAA Division II National Tournament for only the second time in school history.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Junior guard Ciara Geiger, a transfer from Urbana University, and sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker each were honored on the preseason all-conference squads.  Geiger was voted first team all-conference while Wuebker earned a spot on the second team.

Geiger earned all-region honors last year for the Blue Knights after averaging 18.4 points per game.  The Great Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year racked up a total of 995 points during her two years with Urbana and will be counted on to provide offensive firepower for the Oilers this season.

Wuebker made 26 starts for the Oilers last season as a true freshman, averaging 5.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
