Oilers Head to Ashland/Lake Erie for Hoops

The University of Findlay women's basketball team will be on the road this week to face Ashland University and Lake Erie College.  The Oilers will play the Eagles on Thursday (5:30 p.m.) before taking on the Storm this Saturday (1 p.m.).

Series Information

The Oilers trail 23-16 in the all-time series against Ashland dating back to the 1990-91 campaign when the Eagles were victorious by a score of 58-42.

The Eagles came to Croy Gymnasium early this season on Jan. 23 and defeated the Oilers by a score of 80-55 behind 25 points from Taylor Woods.  The Oilers only shot 25.4 percent (17-of-67) from the floor in the game while Ashland hit on 58.8 percent (30-of-51) of their shot attempts.

Margaret Wuebker led Findlay with 21 points on 7-of-16 shooting.  She also added four rebounds, three steals and a block.

The Oilers sport a 13-1 record against the Storm dating back to the 1988-89 campaign when Findlay won by a score of 106-54.

The Oilers claimed a 73-60 win over Lake Erie earlier this season on Jan. 25 in Croy Gymnasium behind 17 points and 11 rebounds from Margaret Wuebker. 

Lacey Kessler came off the bench to provide 13 points and six boards while Nikki Gunning contributed 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting.

Findlay

The Oilers women's basketball team found their stroke against Tiffin University on Saturday, Feb. 8 as they defeated the Dragons by a score of 81-59 in Croy Gymnasium.

The Oilers, who improved to 10-11 on the year with the win, shot 51.6 percent (32-of-62) from the floor and dished out 23 assists.  It was the first time the Oilers have shot over 50 percent from the field in a game since they connected on 51.9 percent of their shots at Northwood on Dec. 7.

Kelsey Lewis led the charge and tied a school record by going 8-of-8 from the field in the win.  Her perfect outing led to a career-high 20 points and engraves her name in the Oilers record book alongside Brittay Wells, who finished 8-of-8 from the field in a 76-55 win against Siena Heights on Nov. 29, 2005.

Ciara Geiger also had a standout game for the Oilers as she recorded 16 points, nine rebounds and four steals.

Karli Beasley also reached double figures in the win with 12 points.  She also added four rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Karli Bonar recorded eight points, six rebounds and three assists while Margaret Wuebker had eight points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block in the win.

Ashland

The Eagles are 13-8 on the year with an 11-6 record in GLIAC play.  Sue Wollenhaupt leads the team with averages of 17.6 points and 8.2 rebounds per game.

Taylor Woods (15.9), Alyssa Miller (12.8) and McKenzie Miller (11.1) are also averaging in double figures on the year.

Lake Erie

The Storm are 9-14 on the year with a 4-13 record in conference competition.  Jackie Murray leads the team and is averaging 11.1 points per game.

Chole Irish (7.9), Kaeding Skelton (7.4) and Chrisy Delaney (7.3) are all averaging over 7.0 points per contest.

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 12.6 steals per game this season, the best mark in the GLIAC and the eighth highest total in the nation.  They also are also ranked second in the league by forcing their opponent into 22.8 turnovers per contest.

Individually, senior guard Ashley Andrews is ranked second in the conference in steals per game with 2.2 per contest while freshman guard Karli Bonar ranks eighth with a 1.8 steals per game average.

Junior guard Ciara Geiger (1.7), junior forward Lacey Kessler (1.4), senior guard Karli Beasley (1.2), junior guard Nikki Gunning (1.1), sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker (1.1) and junior guard Kristin Klausing (1.0) are also averaging at least one steal per contest for the Oilers this season.

Making Shots

Sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker ranks eighth in the league in shooting percentage as she is connecting on 52.1 percent of her attempts from the field this season.

Balanced Scoring

The Oilers are averaging 68.2 points per game, the 11th best total in the GLIAC.  They are doing so with a balanced scoring attack, which features seven players averaging 5.0 points per contest or more.

Sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker leads the team with a scoring average of 12.9 points per game while junior guard Ciara Geiger is providing 10.0 points per contest.

Taking Care of the Ball

The Oilers are only turning the ball over 16.0 times per game, which is the seventh best mark in the GLIAC.

The Oilers also hold a +6.8 advantage in the turnover column, the best total in the league and the fourth best mark in the nation.

Raining 3's

The Oilers also connecting on 6.9 three pointers per game, which is the third highest mark in the conference. 

Freshman guard Karli Bonar is connecting on 2.1 triple tries per game this year, which is the seventh highest total in the GLIAC. 

Bonar set Ohio state records for most three pointers made in a season (110) and most made triples in a career (350) during her time at Shadyside High School.

In the Oilers 87-54 win over Northwestern Ohio on Nov. 30, the Oilers canned a season-high 15 three pointers and attempted a school record 42 triple tries.

Swatting Shots

Sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker ranks 13th in the GLIAC in blocked shots per game at 0.9 swats per contest.  Teammate Kelsey Lewis, also a sophomore forward, is right behind her with 0.8 blocks per contest.

Passing the Rock

The Oilers are third in the conference in assists per game with 14.4 per contest.  Junior guard Kristin Klausing is dishing out 2.7 assists per contest to lead the team while senior guard Ashley Andrews ranks second on the squad with 2.5 dimes per game.

Getting Buckets

Junior guard Ciara Geiger has proven she has the ability to fill up the basket.  Geiger is in her first season with the Oilers after transferring from Urbana University, where she scored 995 points in her first two collegiate seasons.  The Ft. Wayne, Ind. native has now racked up 1,205 career points in her collegiate career.

A Record-Setting Performance

Sophomore forward Kelsey Lewis tied a school record by going 8-of-8 from the field in the Oilers 81-59 win over Tiffin on Feb. 8.  Lewis finished the game with a career-high 20 points and is now tied with Brittany Wells for the most made shots in a game without a miss.  Wells went 8-of-8 from the field in a 76-55 win against Siena Heights on Nov. 29, 2005.

Reaching the 90-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored 90 or more points 64 times since the 1978-79 season and sport a 63-1 (.984) record in those games.  Their only loss came at the hands of Wilmington, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 110-98 in 1985.

GLIAC Tournament

The Oilers have appeared in the GLIAC Tournament five times in their history.  They sport a 3-5 record in tournament play.

Winning GLIAC South Division Titles

The Oilers have won two out the last four GLIAC South Division titles (2009-10, 2010-11) and as a program, have captured championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010 and 2011.

Preseason GLIAC Poll

The Oilers were picked to finish second in the South Division of the GLIAC this season according to the annual preseason poll, which was released on Nov. 7.

The Oilers received a total of 177 votes and ten first place votes in the poll.  They fell one vote shy of the top spot in the division, which is held by Ashland University with 178 votes.  The Eagles also received 13 first place votes and are the defending NCAA Division II National Champions.

Findlay finished the 2012-13 campaign with a 24-6 record.  They were ranked 20th in the nation in the final poll and reached the NCAA Division II National Tournament for only the second time in school history.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Junior guard Ciara Geiger, a transfer from Urbana University, and sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker each were honored on the preseason all-conference squads.  Geiger was voted first team all-conference while Wuebker earned a spot on the second team.

Geiger earned all-region honors last year for the Blue Knights after averaging 18.4 points per game.  The Great Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year racked up a total of 995 points during her two years with Urbana and will be counted on to provide offensive firepower for the Oilers this season.

Wuebker made 26 starts for the Oilers last season as a true freshman, averaging 5.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
