Oilers Come Up Short at Ashland

The University of Findlay women's basketball team suffered a tough, 88-80 loss at Ashland University on Thursday, Feb. 13.  The loss gives the Oilers a 10-12 record on the season with a 7-11 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

The game, which featured 19 lead changes, was tied at 77-77 with 2:06 remaining after junior guard Ciara Geiger hit three free throws.  Ashland's McKenzie Miller then answered with a three pointer just seconds later before Jamie Sobczak went to the line and extended the Eagles lead to five at 82-77.

The Eagles would continue to extend their lead as Alyssa Miller scored four straight points to put Ashland up 86-77 with only 36 seconds left.  Freshman guard Karli Bonar then canned a three pointer to snap the scoring run, but Taylor Woods made two free throws for the Eagles to put the game out of reach.

The Oilers shot well for the second straight game as they hit 47.5 percent (28-of-59) from the floor.  They also canned 43.5 percent (10-of-23) of their three point tries and hit 14-of-15 (93.3%) attempts from the charity stripe in the loss.

Ashland meanwhile hit 55 percent (33-of-60) of their field goal attempts and made 41.2 percent (7-of-17) tries from the three point line in the game.

Sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker led the Oilers with 19 points and six rebounds while junior guard Nikki Gunning had 12 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Junior forward Lacey Kessler also reached double figures with 11 points to go along with five rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench.

Woods led the Eagles with 25 points while Miller stuffed the stat sheet with 20 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and five steals.

The Oilers will be back again on Saturday when they face Lake Erie at 1 p.m. in Painesville, Ohio.
