Women's Basketball Heads to Tech & N. Mich.

The University of Findlay women's basketball team will travel to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan this week to take on Michigan Technological University and Northern Michigan University. The Oilers will play the Huskies on Dec. 11 at 5:30 p.m. and then face the Wildcats on Dec. 13 at 1 p.m.

Series Information

The Oilers trail in the all-time series against Michigan Tech by a 15-5 margin dating back to the 1997-98 campaign when the Huskies rolled to a 79-33 win.

Last season the Oilers dropped a 69-63 decision against Michigan Tech in Croy Gymnasium as they hit only 29.1 percent (16-of-55) of their field goal attempts.

Lacey Kessler led the way with 15 points and seven rebounds while Karli Beasley had 12 points, five boards and three steals.

The Oilers trail by a margin of 17-4 in the all-time series against Northern Michigan dating back to the 1997-98 campaign when the Wildcats pounded Findlay by a 71-39 margin.

Northern Michigan defeated Findlay by a score of 71-66 last year in Croy despite 21 points and seven rebounds from Margaret Wuebker.

Karli Bonar added nine points in the loss.

Findlay

The University of Findlay women's basketball team improved to 4-1 on the season with a 68-63 win over Lake Superior State University on Dec. 6 in Croy Gymnasium.

The Oilers, who trailed for the majority of the game, tied the contest at 58-58 when Haley Horstman connected on a short jumper in the lane.  Lake Superior State would then regain the lead before Lacey Kessler converted a three-point play to give Findlay a 65-63 lead with only 1:22 to play. The athletic play by Kessler was a turning point in the game as the Oilers held the Lakers scoreless down the stretch to pick up their first league victory of the year.

Margaret Wuebker led the team with 19 points and ten rebounds while Kessler had 14 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals in the win.

Karli Bonar also reached double figures with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting.

Kelsey Lewis had a great game for Findlay off the bench with nine points on 4-of-4 shooting.

Michigan Tech

The Huskies are 5-0 on the year with a 2-0 record in conference play.  Brenna Heise leads a balanced offensive attack with 12.2 points per game.

Danielle Blake (11.2), Kelli Guy (11.2) and Morgan Anderson (10.2) are also scoring in double figures for Michigan Tech on the season.

Northern Michigan

The Wildcats are 3-2 on the year with a 1-1 record in GLIAC play. Alyssa Colla has led the team in the early part of the season with an average of 18.8 points and 7.4 rebounds per contest.

Lauren Gruber and Abbey DeBruin are also playing well and sport averages of 14.6 and 11.0 points per game, respectively.

Putting Points on the Board

The Oilers are averaging 79.8 points per game this season, the third best mark in the GLIAC. They have done so with a balanced offensive attack that includes nine players averaging more than 5.5 points per game.

Junior forward Margaret Wuebker leads the team with an average of 12.8 points per game while senior guard Nikki Gunning is also scoring in double figures on a nightly basis with 10.8 points per outing.

The Oilers have nine different players reach double figures in a game this season.

Hot Shooting

The Oilers have come out on fire in the early season and are shooting 48.1 percent from the floor as a team, which is the second best mark in the GLIAC. Junior forward Kelsey Lewis leads the team and is ranked first in the conference with a 70.0 percent shooting clip.

Junior forward Margaret Wuebker is also shooting the ball well and is making 61.3 percent of her attempts.  Wuebker's percentage is the fourth best mark in the GLIAC.

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 11.0 steals per game, which is the second best total in the GLIAC.  Senior forward Lacey Kessler leads the team with an average of 1.8 steals per contest.

Cleaning the Glass

The Oilers have a 3-0 record this season when they out-rebound their opponents.  They are averaging 36.2 rebounds per game this year and have been led by junior forward Margaret Wuebker, who is grabbing 4.2 rebounds per game.

Scoring in Bunches

Senior guard Ciara Geiger has had a knack for putting the ball in the hole during her collegiate career as she has racked up 1,296 points. Geiger scored 995 points for Urbana University during her first two collegiate seasons before transferring to Findlay last season. In her first season with the Oilers last year, Geiger scored 264 points.

Reaching the 90-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored 90 or more points 66 times since the 1978-79 season and sport a 65-1 (.985) record in those games.  Their only loss came at the hands of Wilmington, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 110-98 in 1985.

The Oilers have put up 90 or more points twice this season. They defeated Mercyhurst by a score of 91-60 on Nov. 29 and came away with a 93-48 win over Michigan-Dearborn on Dec. 1.

Double-Doubles

The Oilers have had two players record double-doubles this season, the most recent coming from junior forward Margaret Wuebker. Wuebker tallied 19 points and ten rebounds in the Oilers 68-63 win over Lake Superior State on Dec. 6 in Croy Gymnasium.

Junior forward Kelsey Lewis recorded her first career double-double in the Oilers 91-60 win at home over Mercyhurst on Nov. 29 with ten points and ten rebounds.
