Oilers Head to SVSU/Hillsdale this Week

The Oilers will hit the road to face Saginaw Valley State and Hillsdale this weekend in GLIAC play. The Oilers will play the Cardinals on Jan. 8 at 6 p.m. and then face the Chargers on Jan. 10 at 1 p.m.

Series Information

The Oilers currently hold a 14-10 advantage in the all-time series against Saginaw Valley State dating back to the 1978-79 campaign, which saw the Cardinals win by an 88-48 margin.

Findlay came away with a 66-56 win over the Cardinals last year in Croy Gymnasium.  The Oilers forced 30 turnovers and came away with 18 steals in the game. 

Margaret Wuebker led the team with 15 points and eight rebounds while Karli Bonar contributed ten points and three steals.

The Oilers currently trail 19-18 in the all-time series against Hillsdale dating back to the 1985-86 campaign when Findlay came out on top by a score of 74-47.

The two programs split their regular season series last year with each team winning on the road. The Chargers defeated the Oilers by a score of 66-61 in Croy Gymnasium before Findlay closed the year with a 78-66 win at

In the loss at home, Ciara Geiger led the team with 13 points. In the Oilers win on the road, Bonar had 17 points on the strength of five three pointers.

Findlay

The Oilers claimed a 79-60 win over 17th-ranked Grand Valley State University on Jan. 4 in Croy Gymnasium. The victory gave the Oilers a 6-4 record on the season with a 2-4 mark in the GLIAC.

The Oilers built a 37-24 lead at the break and then cruised through the second half for their second conference win of the season.  They shot 52.6 percent (30-of-57) from the floor and also held a 40-27 advantage on the boards in the game.  Findlay also connected on 8-of-17 (47.1%) shot attempts from behind the three point line and blocked six shots during the win.

Karli Bonar led the team with 18 points, connecting on a career-high 6-of-7 three point tries in the game, while Lacey Kessler stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Margaret Wuebker had 15 points, five rebounds and two blocks in only 18 minutes of action while Kelsey Lewis recorded her second double-double of the season with ten points and ten boards in 15 minutes of work.

Ciara Geiger posted ten points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals for Findlay as well.

Saginaw Valley State

The Cardinals are 5-7 on the season with a 0-6 record in conference play.  They have been led by Emily Wendling, who is averaging 17.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.

Danielle Carriere (12.9) and Samantha Zirzow (11.6) are also scoring in double figures on a nightly basis for the Cardinals as well.

Hillsdale

The Chargers are 8-2 on the year with a 4-2 mark in GLIAC play. Megan Fogt leads the team and is averaging 15.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. She is also recording 1.8 steals and 1.5 blocks per contest.

Kayla Geffert is also scoring in double figures and is averaging 10.1 points per game.

Putting Points on the Board

The Oilers are averaging 72.9 points per game this season, the fifth best mark in the GLIAC. They have done so with a balanced offensive attack that includes seven players averaging more than 5.9 points per game.

Junior forward Margaret Wuebker leads the team with an average of 12.5 points per game.

The Oilers have also had nine different players reach double figures in a game this season.

Hot Shooting

The Oilers are shooting 45.8 percent from the floor as a team, which is the second best mark in the GLIAC.  Junior forward Margaret Wuebker is ranked fifth in the conference with a 54.9 percent shooting clip while sophomore guard Karli Bonar checks in seventh at 52.5 percent. 

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 9.6 steals per game, which is the sixth best total in the GLIAC.  Freshman guard Haley Horstman leads five Oilers who are averaging more than 1.0 steals per game with 1.4 thefts per contest.

Bombs Away

The Oilers are shooting 35.6 percent from three point range this season, the sixth best percentage in the GLIAC. Sophomore guard Karli Bonar leads the squad with a 45.8 percent shooting clip from long range, which is the fifth best mark in the league.  She is also making 2.2 three pointers per game, the seventh best total in the GLIAC.

Getting to the Line

The Oilers have made more free throws this year than their opponents have attempted. They have connected on 173 free throws this season while their opponents have only made 143 trips to the line.

Automatic from the Line

Senior guard Nikki Gunning is hitting 93.3 percent of her free throw attempts this season. Her shooting percentage from the charity stripe is the second best mark in the GLIAC.

In addition, junior foward Margaret Wuebker ranks ninth in the conference with a 85.2 percent shooting clip from the free throw line while senior forward Lacey Kessler ranks tenth at 84.1 percent.

Dropping Dimes

Senior guard Kristin Klausing ranks fourth in the GLIAC with an average of 3.3 assists per game.
