Bonar Breaks Record in Win at Malone

Box Score

The University of Findlay women's basketball team came away with a 78-70 win over Malone University on Feb. 21 in Canton, Ohio.

The Oilers, who built a 40-33 lead when the first half buzzer sounded, found themselves up only one point at 67-66 with 3:41 to play in the game. Junior forward Margaret Wuebker then made a pair of shots from the free throw line, which was followed by a split at the charity stripe by senior guard Kristin Klausing.

Leading by four at 70-66, Malone split a pair at that line before Findlay went on a mini 6-0 run to give them a 76-67 advantage with only 16 ticks left. The run was fueled by a three pointer from senior guard Ciara Geiger and free throws by Wuebker and senior guard Nikki Gunning. Malone then hit a three with only nine seconds to play, but freshman guard Haley Horstman closed the game out at the free throw line to improve the Oilers record to 15-10 on the year.

The Oilers, who have an 11-10 record in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play, shot 49.1 percent (27-of-55) from the floor and canned 10-of-21 (47.6%) tries from three point range in the game. They also forced 17 turnovers and held a 28-11 advantage in points off the bench.

Geiger led the way with 20 points and seven rebounds while Gunning came off the bench to provide 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

Sophomore guard Karli Bonar recorded 12 points, hitting 4-of-7 attempts from three point range. Her four makes gives her 69 on the season, which breaks the school record for most made three pointers in a year. The previous record of 68 was set by Maggie Gompers during the 2008-09 campaign.

Wuebker also provided a spark off the bench with nine points, eight rebounds, three blocks and two assists while Horstman and Klausing each had seven points apiece in the win.

The Pioneers, who made 15 three pointers in the game, were led by Rachel Goddard's 17 points.

The Oilers will now prepare for their final regular season game of the season next Thursday (2/26) against 14th-ranked Wayne State University. The game, which will also be senior day for the Oilers, is scheduled to tip at 5:30 p.m. in Croy Gymnasium.
