Oilers to Participate in Cruzin Classic in Ft. Lauderdale

The Oilers will travel to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for a pair of games in the Cruzin Classic.  The first game will be against Saint Leo University on Thursday, Dec. 17 at 3:00 pm. The second game is on Dec. 18 and will be against Embry-Riddle. That game begins at 10:00 am.

Series Information

The Oilers won the only matchup against Saint Leo by a 65-54 score. That game took place in the 2002-03 season. This will be the first matchup between Findlay and Embry-Riddle.

Against Saint Leo, Jennifer Winright led the offense for Findlay as she scored 15 points in the victory. Winright went on to average 7.2 points per game that sesaon.

The leading rebounder for the Oilers was Lydia Carpenter, who grabbed 10 boards. Carpenter wound up earning all-GLIAC honors that season as she would average 14.1 points per game while grabbing 6.9 rebounds per game on a Findlay squad that finished the season 10-19 overall.

Findlay

The Oilers are off to their best start since the 2010-11 season as they have put together a 7-1 record overall with a perfect 4-0 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They have won four straight contests, the latest of which was a 60-42 victory over Northern Michigan on Dec. 12. That win was the 200th of head coach Jim Wiedie's career.

Findlay is being led offensively by sophomore guard Haley Horstman who is scoring 14 points per game, including a career high 22 points on Dec. 5 vs Northwood. Horstman ranks sixth in the GLIAC with a 56.6 shooting percentage.

Leading the GLIAC in that category is senior Kelsey Lewis, the Oilers second leading scorer at 11 points per game. Lewis is shooting a scorching 72.3% from the floor which has led the Oilers to a team percentage of 48.7, the seventh best shooting percentage in the country.

The Oilers are hitting 40.2 percent of their three point tries this season, tied for the best percentage in the GLIAC. They have been led by sophomore guard Lynsey Englebrecht, who is hitting 54.2 percent of her long range attempts. The percentage is the best mark in the GLIAC.

Saint Leo

The Lions are 3-5 on the season, including a double-overtime loss to #4 Nove Southeastern, with a 1-4 mark in Sunshine State Conference (SSC) competition. They are coming off of a 64-49 loss to Barry University.

Chelsy Springs comes in as the leading scorer with an average of 19.5 points per game. She is shooting 59.8% this year and is taking an average of 14 shots per game. Teammates Chanchi Guzman and Izabell Skoogh are scoring 16.6 and 11.6 ppg, respectively.

Embry-Riddle

The Eagles have compiled a 3-5 mark overall with a 1-3 record in SSC play. They are coming off a 60-48 loss to Flagler College.

Sabrina Whiting is leading the Eagles in scoring with 13.3 points per game while Mercedes Jorge is dropping in 10.3 points per game. Jorge leads the team in rebounding as she is grabbing 4.6 rebounds per contest.

Bombs Away

Junior guard Karli Bonar broke the school record for most made three pointers in a season last year with 71. She bettered the mark of 68, which was set by Maggie Gompers during the 2008-09 campaign.

Bonar has made 131 career three pointers at Findlay, the third best mark in school history. She is chasing former UF All-American Kayla Brown for fifth place on the list. Brown canned 138 three pointers for Findlay from 2010-13.

Chasing 1,000 Career Points

Senior forward Margaret Wuebker is looking to become the Oilers 20th member of the 1,000-point club this season. Wuebker has scored 760 career points during her tenure with the program, leaving her 240 points shy of the 1,000-point plateau.

Reaching the 90-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored 90 or more points 68 times since the 1978-79 season and sport a 67-1 (.985) record in those games.  Their only loss came at the hands of Wilmington, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 110-98 in 1985.

Winning GLIAC South Division Titles

The Oilers have won five GLIAC South Division titles since joining the league in 1997. They have captured championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010 and 2011.

GLIAC Tournament

The Oilers have appeared in the GLIAC Tournament five times in their history.  They sport a 3-5 record in tournament play.
