Oilers Head to Ferris, Grand Valley St.

The Oilers will get back on the court with a double-dose of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action as they travel to Ferris State on Saturday, Jan. 2 for a game that begins at 1:00pm, and then head to Grand Valley State on Sunday, Jan. 3. That game will also begin at 1:00pm.

Series Information

The Oilers and Bulldogs have met 21 times since their initial contest in the 1997-98 season. Findlay has posted a 9-12 record in those games and won their first game against Ferris State by a score of 66-59.

Their last meeting came on Jan. 2 of 2015 with Findlay falling at home by a score of 63-60. The Oilers shot just 34.5% in the contest. Karli Bonar led the home team with 15 points, all of which came via the three-point shot. Maragret Wuebker grabbed eight rebounds while Haley Horstman dished out six assists.

The Oilers and Lakers have met 20 times since their initial meeting in the 1997-98 season. Findlay is 7-13 in those games and lost 68-52 in their first meeting back in 1997-98.

The previous meeting, a Jan. 4 meeting in Croy Gymnasium, saw the Oilers dominate their way to a 79-60 win.

Findlay shot 52.6% from the floor and five players scored in double figures: Karli Bonar (18), Lacey Kessler (16), Margaret Wuebker (15), Ciara Geiger (10), and Kelsey Lewis (10).

Findlay

The Oilers are off to their best start since the 1999-200 season as they have put together a 9-1 record overall with a perfect 4-0 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They have won six straight contests, the latest of which was a 65-42 victory over Embry-Riddle on Dec. 18.

Findlay is being led offensively by sophomore guard Haley Horstman who is scoring 12.5 points per game, including a career high 22 points on Dec. 5 vs Northwood. Horstman ranks 14th in the GLIAC with a 51.6 shooting percentage.

Leading the GLIAC in that category is senior Kelsey Lewis, the Oilers second leading scorer at 10.5 points per game. Lewis is shooting a scorching 64.1% from the floor which has led the Oilers to a team percentage of 46.9, the 12th best shooting percentage in the country.

The Oilers are hitting 41.4 percent of their three point tries this season, tied for the best percentage in the GLIAC. They have been led by sophomore guard Lynsey Englebrecht, who is hitting 61.3 percent of her long range attempts. The percentage is the best mark in the GLIAC.

Ferris State

The Bulldogs come into the game sporting a 2-8 record with a 2-2 tab in GLIAC play.

Rachel McIerney is the only player scoring double-figures as she is netting 12.5 ppg. McIerney is shooting 51.4% from the floor and is pulling in 6.0 rpg. Alexis Huntey is just shy of that with her 9.5 ppg. Huntley is the leading rebounder with her 9.5 rpg.

Katie Mavis is keeping the offense going with her 3.0 assists and leads the defense with 2.3 steals per game.

Grand Valley State

The Lakers enter the game with a 7-3 record and a 4-1 mark in conference play. Their most impressive win came on Nov. 25 when they took down #2 Lewis by a score of 71-63.

GVSU is led offensively by Kayla Dawson who is averaging 14.5 ppg while shooting 46% from the floor. Dawson's 5.0 rpg are also good for best on the team. Brionna Barnett is the only other Laker averaging double figures with her 12.4 ppg. She leads the team with 45 asssits.

Bombs Away

Junior guard Karli Bonar has made 152 career three pointers at Findlay, the fourth best mark in school history. She is chasing former UF star Audra Mihalic for third place on the all-time list. Mihalic canned 160 three pointers for the Oilers from 2007-10.

Bonar broke the school record for most made three pointers in a season last year with 71. She bettered the mark of 68, which was set by Maggie Gompers during the 2008-09 campaign.

In high school at Shadyside, Bonar set Ohio state records for most three pointers made in a season (110) and most made triples in a career (350).Chasing 1,000 Career Points.

Senior forward Margaret Wuebker is looking to become the Oilers 20th member of the 1,000-point club this season. Wuebker has scored 760 career points during her tenure with the program, leaving her 240 points shy of the 1,000-point plateau.

Reaching the 90-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored 90 or more points 68 times since the 1978-79 season and sport a 67-1 (.985) record in those games.  Their only loss came at the hands of Wilmington, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 110-98 in 1985.

Winning GLIAC South Division Titles

The Oilers have won five GLIAC South Division titles since joining the league in 1997. They have captured championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010 and 2011.

GLIAC Tournament

The Oilers have appeared in the GLIAC Tournament five times in their history.  They sport a 3-5 record in tournament play.
