Findlay Improves Streak With Win Over FSU

Big Rapids, MI – The University of Findlay women's basketball team continued playing like a first place team on Saturday, Jan. 2 with an 80-67 win over Ferris State University. The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) victory improves the Oilers record to 10-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 mark in conference play. Findlay has now won seven straight contests, the first time they have put together such a streak since the 2012-13 season when they rattled off 13 straight wins.

Findlay never trailed in the contest as they began the game with a 5-0 lead and ultimately a 15-12 first quarter advantage. Ferris State scored the first bucket of the second quarter making the score 15-14, but that is as close as the game would get. Findlay pushed their lead to 36-28 by halftime and cruised to a 13-point victory.

As a team, the Oilers held major advantages in turnovers and free-throw percentage. Findlay forced 25 turnovers, ten of which were steals, and shot a season-best 94.1% (16-of-17) from the charity stripe.

Leading the team in scoring was sophomore Haley Horstman who was able to drop in 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting. She hit 2-of-2 from behind the three-point line. Horstman led the team with her six rebounds and also had three assists.

Seniors Margaret Wuebker and Kelsey Lewis each scored in double-figures as well with the pair netting 14 and 11 points, respectively. Wuebker led the team with her 4-for-4 performance from the free-throw line. She also had three assists and three rebounds while Lewis picked up four rebounds.

Sophomore Emily Molnar came off the bench and led the team with her five assists. She also recorded five points and a steal.

The Oilers are back on the court tomorrow, Jan. 3, as they travel to Allendale, Michigan to take on Grand Valley State University who is currently in second place in the GLIAC North. That game will begin at 1:00pm.
