Oilers Look to Rebound vs. SVSU/Hillsdale

The Oilers will be home for the first time since Dec. 12 as they play host to Saginaw Valley State University in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) matchup on Thursday, Jan. 7. The game is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.

Series Information

This will be the 25th meeting between the Oilers and the Cardinals, a series that dates back to 1978-79, the first year for the Findlay women's basketball program. The Oilers lost their first meeting with SVSU by a final of 88-48.

The last time these teams met Jan. 8, 2015 when the Oilers traveled to University Center, Michigan and lost 68-62. The Orange and Black held a 10-point lead midway through the second half at 51-41, but were out-scored by a 27-11 in the final 11 minutes of the game.

Ciara Geiger paced the Oilers offense with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting while Haley Horstman, Karli Bonar, and Kelsey Lewis each scored nine points. Lewis was also able to grab seven rebounds while Horstman had three assists, two rebounds, and two steals.

Nikki Gunning had eight points, four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals off the bench while Margaret Wuebker chipped in six points, five boards and three steals.

Five Cardinals scored in double figures, led by 16 points from Danielle Carriere. Emily Wendling led the team with 13 rebounds.

Findlay

The Oilers enter the game with a 10-2 record overall with a 5-1 mark in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play. This is the best start for a Findlay women's basketball team since 2012-13 when the Oilers started the season 11-3.

Findlay is led by sophomore Haley Horstman who is scoring at a rate of 12.0 points per game, grabbing 3.5 rebounds per game, and dishing out 2.2 assists per game.

Also picking up a bulk of the scoring are seniors Margaret Wuebker and Kelsey Lewis. They are scoring 10.1 and 9.7 points per game, respectively. Wuebker is second on the team with 5.4 rebounds per contest while Lewis is grabbing 4.9 rebounds per game. Lewis' field goal percentage of 64.8 is the best in the GLIAC.

The Oilers have shot the ball well in the early part of the season. Despite struggling vs. Grand Valley, Findlay is still connecting on 45.1 percent of their field goal attempts. Their shooting total is the third best mark in the GLIAC.

Saginaw Valley

The Cardinals enter the contest with a 7-4 record overall and a 4-2 mark in GLIAC play. They have won seven of their last nine games following back-to-back losses to open the season. They are coming off of an 80-72 victory over Walsh.

As a team, Saginaw Valley State is leading the GLIAC in defensive rebounding with 29.5 per game and are fourth in overall rebounds with 41.0 per contest.

Currently fifth in the league in scoring at 72.8 points per game, the Cardinals are led by junior Emily Wendling who is averaging a double-double with 21.6 points per game and 10.4 rebounds per game while shooting 63.2% from the floor, the second best mark in the conference.The 6-3 forward was named GLIAC "Freshman of the Year" following the 2012-13 season.

The other player scoring in double figures is freshman Halee Nieman, who is scoring 11.4 points per game. She is pulling in 4.5 rebounds per game, as well.

Freshman Anna Hall and junior Katelyn Carriere are each scoring 8.9 points per game.

Hillsdale

The Chargers are currently 6-4 overall with a 3-3 record in conference play.  

Senior Kayla Geffert is leading the offense as she is scoring 8.2 points per contest. Geffert is also the second leading rebounder with her 5.0 rebounds per game.

Junior Becca Scherting and freshman Makenna Ott are also scoring the ball as they are dropping in 7.3 and 7.0 points per game, respectively. Scherting is leading the team with 1.3 assists per game and is also pulling down 3.4 rebounds per game while Ott is rebounding at a clip of 4.1 boards per game.

The Chargers are coming off an 81-71 win over Malone in while Hillsdale shot 42.9% from the field and turning the ball over a season-low, 13 times.

Bombs Away

Junior guard Karli Bonar has made 157 career three pointers at Findlay, the fourth best mark in school history. She is chasing former UF star Audra Mihalic for third place on the all-time list. Mihalic canned 160 three pointers for the Oilers from 2007-10. 

Bonar broke the school record for most made three pointers in a season last year with 71. She bettered the mark of 68, which was set by Maggie Gompers during the 2008-09 campaign.

Chasing 1,000 Career Points

Senior forward Margaret Wuebker is looking to become the Oilers 20th member of the 1,000-point club this season. Wuebker has scored 881 career points during her tenure with the program, leaving her 119 points shy of the 1,000-point plateau.

Reaching the 90-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored 90 or more points 68 times since the 1978-79 season and sport a 67-1 (.985) record in those games.  Their only loss came at the hands of Wilmington, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 110-98 in 1985.

Winning GLIAC South Division Titles

The Oilers have won five GLIAC South Division titles since joining the league in 1997. They have captured championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010 and 2011.

GLIAC Tournament

The Oilers have appeared in the GLIAC Tournament five times in their history.  They sport a 3-5 record in tournament play.
