Early Lead Vanishes at Wheeling Jesuit
Wheeling, WV – The University of Findlay women's basketball team went on the road to Wheeling, West Virginia on Wednesday, Nov. 16 and dropped a non-conference game to the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals by a score of 71-63. The loss gives Findlay a 1-2 record on the year.
Findlay started the game well as they hit three triples in the first seven minutes to get off to an early 15-6 lead and ended the first quarter with a 17-12 advantage. From that point on, the game was close and before the final buzzer, the teams would be tied ten times and trade the lead seven times.
Both teams shot the ball well from deep with Findlay hitting 10-of-21 (42.9%) from beyond the arc and Wheeling Jesuit connecting on 9-of-17 (52.9%). However, the Cardinals shot 16-of-20 from the charity stripe to Findlay's 3-of-7, and Wheeling held a major rebounding advantage at 41-27.
The Oilers were led by junior guard Lynsey Englebrecht who, for the second time this season, came off the bench and knocked down a career-high six triples to lead the team in scoring. She finished the game with 18 points on 6-of-11 from deep.
Junior Haley Horstman, senior Karli Bonar, and sophomore Anna Hintz each picked up nine points for the Oilers. Hintz and sophomore Jenna Stegmaier each had five rebounds to lead Findlay while junior Emily Molnar tied a career-high with five assists.
The Oilers will play their first home game this Saturday, Nov. 19 when they host St. Francis (Ind.) in a game set to begin at 7:00 pm.
