Lakers Too Tough in Allendale
Allendale, MI – The University of Findlay women's basketball team dropped a 64-43 decision on the road at Grand Valley State University. With the Thursday, Dec. 1 loss, the Oilers fall to 4-3 with an 0-1 mark to open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.
Findlay took an early 4-0 lead just a minute and a half into the game, but an 15-2 run from Grand Valley would give the Lakers control at 15-6 with three minutes to play in the first quarter. The first frame ended with the Oilers trailing 18-10 and the Lakers opened the second with a 14-0 run to give them a 32-10 lead midway through the second.
By halftime, the Lakers lead was 41-16, the largest deficit the Oilers have seen so far this season. In that half, Grand Valley hit nine of their 16 three-point attempts and forced Findlay into 16 turnovers. The Oilers did outscore the Lakers 27-23 in the second half, but the first half deficit was too much to overcome.
Findlay, which came into the game shooting 41% from deep and making 6.8 three-pointers per game, shot just 3-13 from deep in the contest while Grand Valley drilled 11-of-31, a season-high for the Lakers.
Junior Haley Horstman led the way for Findlay as she scored 8 points on 4-of-6 shooting while fellow junior Sarah Baer came off the bench to score six points and grab a team-high seven rebounds.
Due to the NCAA Midwest Volleyball Regional, the Oilers next game, which was scheduled for Saturday, will instead be played on Sunday, Dec. 4 at Ferris State University at 12:00 pm.
