Oilers Control Lakers to Earn First GLIAC Win
Findlay, OH – The University of Findlay women's basketball team used a late push to secure a victory over Lake Superior State on Saturday, Dec. 10. With the 75-63 win, the Oilers even their record at 5-5 on the year and have a 1-3 mark in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.
Controlling the game from the opening tip, the Oilers had a 17-7 lead after the first quarter and took a 39-22 lead into the locker room at halftime. That lead was cut to four points at 57-53 with 7:34 to play in the game but a 12-2 run ended the comeback threat.
Sophomore Jenna Stegmaier and junior Lynsey Englebrecht were the leading scorers for the Orange and Black as they each poured in 11 points. Englebrecht shot three-of-four from deep and hit a pair of free-throws while Stegmaier made four-of-five from the floor including a three pointer. Stegmaier was also the leading rebounder with seven boards.
Junior Haley Horstman also reached double figures with ten points on four-of-eleven shooting. She grabbed five rebounds, had four assists, and led the team with five steals. Junior Kendyl Hinton led the team with five assists, a new career-high.
Findlay won the battle on the boards 30-27 and shot a blistering 52.9% (27of-51). The Oilers' bench was also a key as they picked up 33 points from non-starters.
The Oilers are back on the court on Thursday, Dec. 15 when they head to the Upper Peninsula to take on Northern Michigan.
