Third Quarter Dooms Oilers in Houghton
Houghton, MI - The University of Findlay women's basketball team dropped a 61-47 decision at the hands of the Michigan Tech Huskies on Saturday, Dec. 17. The road loss gives the Oilers a record of 5-7 overall and a 1-5 record in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.
The first half of basketball was back and forth and just seven minutes into the game, the Oilers had built a 14-7 lead. Michigan Tech battled back and took a 31-28 lead into halftime.
A quick three from senior Karli Bonar tied the game at 31-31 coming out of the break and a free throw from Christa Puthoff gave the Oilers a 32-31 lead. That lead did not last long as the Huskies would catch fire for the remainder of the quarter. Michigan Tech went on an 18-3 run on 5-of-10 shooting as well as 4-of-4 from the free-throw line. Each team scored 12 points in the final quarter to end the game.
Findlay was held to 17-of-51 from the floor for 33.3%. The 17 field goals were the lowest of the season for the Oilers. Michigan Tech forced Findlay into 14 turnovers and shot 24-of-56 from the floor.
Junior Haley Horstman led the Oilers with 14 points on 6-of-13 from the floor including a pair of three pointers. She also led the team with five rebounds.
Sophomore Lynsey Englebrecht came off the bench to score nine points on three shots from deep while junior Shannon Zajec also helped Findlay off the bench with six points in three minutes.
The Oilers are off until after Christmas and will play their next game against Michigan-Dearborn on Dec. 29. That home game will begin at 5:30 pm.
