Big Second Quarter Lifts Oilers to Victory Against Gannon
Erie, Pennsylvania – The University of Findlay women's basketball team used a big second quarter on Wednesday, Nov. 15 to take down the Gannon University Golden Knights by a score of 73-55. The win boosts the Oilers record to 2-1 on the year while Gannon falls to 1-2.
Findlay started out hot as they drained a pair of threes in the first six minutes to help start the game on a 12-0 run. Gannon did not make their first bucket until 3:38 was left in the first quarter, but the Golden Knights closed the quarter on a 14-4 run of their own to keep the game at two points through the first ten minutes.
Gannon would tie the game at 16-16 to begin the second period, but it was all Oilers from then on. In that quarter, Findlay would make 9-of-15 from the floor including 4-of-6 from deep to extend their lead to 40-26 at the midway point of the game.
Findlay outscored Gannon by two points in each of the next two periods to close out the 18-point road victory against a team that has made the NCAA Division II Tournament in four of the previous six seasons.
Senior guard Haley Horstman paced the Oilers with 19 points on a red-hot 8-of-11 from the floor including a pair of balls from deep. Horstman, who scored ten points in the second quarter alone, also grabbed a couple of rebounds and dished out two assists.
Junior Anna Hintz continued a good start to the 2017-18 campaign with 17 points, nine rebounds, and a team-high two steals. Hintz picked up nine points from the free-throw line in the win.
Junior Elissa Ellerbrock and junior Jenna Stegmaier each chipped in ten points for the Orange and Black. Stegmaier also tied a career-high with five assists and set a new career-high with 12 rebounds to earn her first career double-double.
Senior Lynsey Englebrecht made a pair of threes to finish with eight points. She also tied a career-high with five assists.
Gannon's Maggie Mitchell led her squad with a game-high 21 points while Chelsea Rourke recorded a double-double with ten points and 11 rebounds.
The Oilers out-shot the Golden Knights .46.9% (23-of-49) to 35.7% (19-of-53) and also recorded more rebounds (36-28), assists (16-13), and steals (7-2) while turning the ball over four less times (16-20).
Findlay remains on the road and will play their next game on Saturday, Nov. 18 when they travel to Fort Wayne to take on the Division I Mastodons of IPFW. That game will tip at 7:00 pm.
