Oilers Fall Short at Davenport

Grand Rapids, Mich. – The University of Findlay women's basketball team began an eight-game road stand on Friday, Nov. 22 against Davenport University out of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The game was back-and-forth, but the Oilers eventually fell by a score of 73-70 to drop their record to 3-3 on the year. Davenport, which was picked fifth in the GLIAC South Division, improves to 2-3.

Findlay could not have asked for a better first three minutes of action as the visitors jumped out to a 9-0 lead, capped with a three-point jumper by Bridget Landin. But, Davenport was not phased and answered the Oilers hot start with an 11-0 run over the next four minutes to take an 11-9 lead and, by quarter's end, held a 21-14 advantage.

Midway through the second quarter, the Panthers built their biggest lead of the game, a 29-19 advantage with 6:43 to play in the first half. At that point, the teams began trading blows and the Oilers crawled back into the game, knotting the score at 32-32 and ultimately trailing 38-36 at the break.

For the remainder of the game, the teams were never separated by more than five points.

With the score at 67-64 and just over a minute on the clock, Findlay had a pair of three point attempts that failed to drop and Davenport made their free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Neither team shot the ball well, but Findlay did hold the advantage, making 23-of-61 (.377) to just 21-of-73 (.288) for the Panthers. Both teams drilled ten shots from beyond the arc and rebounds were fairly even with the Oilers holding a 49-to-44 advantage. The difference in the game was turnovers. Findlay committed 27 turnovers which led to 25 points for Davenport while the Panthers only turned the ball over 16 times leading to just seven points for the Oilers.

Freshman Elizabeth Flynn scored a season-best 13 points off the bench on 5-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-4 from deep. She added three rebounds, as well.

Sophomores Bridget Landin and Paige Bellman each recorded double-doubles in the game. Landin scored 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds while Bellman scored ten points and also had 13 rebounds. Landin rounded out a solid stat sheet with three assists and three steals.

Also scoring in double-figures was sophomore Sydney Kin who poured in 12 points on a perfect 4-of-4 from the field. She also had three rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.

Findlay will take on Grand Rapids' other GLIAC team, no. 3 Grand Valley State on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 1:00 pm.
