Findlay Wins Nail Biter Against Edinboro
Edinboro, Pa.- The University of Findlay women's basketball team concluded their road slate as they took on the Edinboro University Fighting Scots tonight, Nov. 22, 2022. The Oilers outlasted the Scots through double overtime to win by a score of 86-84. This brings Findlay to a 3-2 record on the year. Edinboro falls to 3-2 on the season.
The Oilers started the game by getting off to an early lead. Sophomore Chloe Callahan put Findlay on the board first before the Fighting Scots put up their own two points to tie the game. From there Findlay scored nine unanswered points. The Oilers held a five point lead heading into the second quarter. Findlay struggled in the second quarter as Edinboro outscored the Oilers 14-5. Edinboro led by five as the teams headed into the locker rooms at the halfway point.
Findlay's struggles continued into the third quarter as they recorded eight turnovers in ten minutes. Edinboro would again outscore the Oilers as they added twelve points to their lead.
Trailing by seventeen entering the fourth quarter, Findlay was reignited as they scored 26 points to the Scot's 9 to bring the game back within reach for the visitors. The Oilers held a one point lead before a foul by Serena Sammarone sent Edinboro to the charity stripe with five seconds remaining. With two free throws to win the game, Edinboro's Lauren Mullen missed the first and made the second to send the contest into overtime.
The first period of overtime was back-and-forth with neither team holding more than a three point lead. Ultimately, the Oilers led by one with six seconds remaining. A foul by Amber Schweiger sent Edinboro back to the charity stripe. After two made free throws, the Oilers saw themselves down by three. With six seconds left, Elizabeth Flynn inbounded to Amber Schweiger who brought the ball up the floor. Two passes later, Amber Schweiger found herself deep with the game on the line. She made the buzzer beater to force the contest into another overtime.
Six straight points by the Oilers, opened the second overtime period. With six seconds left on the clock, it was Edinboro who found themselves on the chase as they trailed by three. Serena Sammarone forced a steal to regain possession and add to the Oilers lead. In a last ditch effort, Edinboro's Hayley Sims hit a three-pointer as the clock ran out but it was the Oilers who came out on top.
On the night, the Oilers connected on 30-of-64 (.469) from the floor including only 6-of-13 (.462) from deep. Edinboro hit 32-of-80 (.400) from the field and just 10-of-36 (.278) from three-point range. Findlay recorded 54 rebounds while Edinboro grabbed 36.
Both teams were haunted by turnovers as the teams combined for 64 in the contest. Findlay accounted for 38.
Leading the Oilers was junior Kate Ellis who secured her first career double-double. Ellis recorded 19 points on 7-of–13 from the floor. The Toledo, Ohio native also grabbed twelve rebounds.
Senior Elizabeth Flynn led Findlay in scoring, putting up a career-high 17 points on the night. She was perfect from the floor going 8-for-8 and 4-for-4 from deep. Sophomore Chloe Callahan and senior Serena Sammarone also scored in double digits. Callahan added 13 while Sammarone contributed 11. Sammarone also added a team-high seven steals.
The Oilers will be back in action Dec. 1 as they host Ashland University in Croy Physical Education Center at 5:30pm.
