Baker Named GLIAC Women's Golf Coach of the Year
Head coach Al Baker was named the 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Golf Coach of the Year as the league office released their postseason honors on Tuesday, May 14.
Baker led the women's squad to a fourth place finish at the 2013 GLIAC Championship and then saw his team place fourth at the East Regional.
A 21-year leader of the Oilers men's and women's golf programs, Baker was named the 2002 and 2008 GLIAC Coach of the Year for men's golf. He has also led the Oilers to 65 tournament victories during his career.
In addition, senior Lauren Vogt captured first team all-conference accolades while junior Brooke Albers earned second team honors.
Vogt, who was a first team all-league pick last year as well, finished fifth at the 2013 GLIAC Championship and was named the GLIAC Golfer of the Week twice during her final year with the team. She also set a new school record for the lowest 18-hole round in school history after firing a 69 (-3) at the Northwood Invitational on April 21 to claim the top spot at the event.
The Auburn, Ind. native recorded nine top-5 finishes on the year to lead the squad.
Albers, who earned honorable mention all-conference honors one year ago, placed eighth at the 2013 GLIAC Championship and recorded a total of four top-10 finishes during the season.
Sophomore Michele Schambs, a second team all-conference pick last year, earned honorable mention honors this year after placing in the top-10 three times during the 2012-13 campaign.
