Schambs in 3rd at National Championship

The University of Findlay women's golf team is in sixth place at the 2014 NCAA Division II National Championship, which wrapped up opening round action on May 14 at the Rock Barn Golf and Spa in Canover, N.C.

The Oilers shot a 309 and were led by junior Michele Schambs, who posted a 1-over par score of 72.

Schambs, who is tied for third at the tournament, birdied holes 13 and 16 to get to 1-under par before suffering a double bogey on the final hole.  She also recorded 14 pars during the first round of the championship event.

Sophomore Kasey Petty fired a 6-over par score of 77 while freshman Shelby Warner posted a 7-over par score of 78 during the first round.

Petty, who is tied for 29th, fired three birdies one day one while Warner, who is tied for 37th, had two.

Senior Brooke Albers and sophomore Hannah Schneider also competed for Findlay on Wednesday and carded scores of 82 and 86, respectively.  Albers is tied for 60th while Schneider is currently 71st.

Lynn University is leading the tournament after posting a 294 and Rollins College is in second with a 297. 

The Oilers are the highest ranked team from the East Region after day one as the University of Indianapolis is seventh with a 310 and Grand Valley State University is tenth with a 315.

The second round of the tournament will be played tomorrow.
