Schambs, Oilers Take 2nd at GLIAC Tournament

The University of Findlay women's golf team placed second at the 2015 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship, which concluded on April 26 at the Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio.

The Oilers finished the tournament with a record-breaking 54-hole score of 931. They shot a 312 in the opening round on Friday before coming back with a 302 on Saturday. They then finished the tournament with a 317 on Sunday for their total.

Grand Valley State University won their eighth consecutive conference championship with a three-round score of 912 (307, 302, 303).

Senior Michele Schambs was the Oilers top finisher, placing second at the tournament, three strokes behind Grand Valley State's Gabrielle Shipley. Schambs 54-hole score of 219 was good enough to set a new school record and earn her first team all-conference accolades. She shot a 72 in each of the first two rounds before coming back with a 75 during the final round of competition.

Schambs posted seven birdies during the tournament and recorded 38 pars during the tournament for Findlay. In the final round, she posted three of her birdies and ended the event three strokes over par.

Junior Kasey Petty also recorded a top-five finish for Findlay as she placed fourth with a 230, the fifth lowest 54-hole score in school history. Petty recorded a 77 on Sunday to go along with her 77 on the first day and 76 on the second. Her consistency was rewarded as she was tabbed first team all-conference as well.

Sophomore Shelby Warner finished the tournament in 13th place with a 237 (83, 72, 82) and earned second team all-conference accolades in the process while freshman Kelsey Koesters finished in a tie for 27th with a 248 (80, 82, 86).

Junior Hannah Schneider also competed for Findlay at the event and posted a three-round total of 253 (87, 83, 83), which was good enough for 31st at the tournament.

In helping lead the Oilers to a second place finish, head coach Dominic Guarnieri was tabbed the 2015 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Co-Coach of the Year. Guarnieri helped lead the Oilers to a seventh place finish at the 2014 NCAA Division II National Championship and his second place finish this season at the conference championship was the Oilers highest placing ever.
