The University of Findlay women's golf team completed day one of the 2016 NCAA Division II East Regional on May 2 at the Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield, Ill. The Oilers carded a 304 on the opening day and currently find themselves in third place at the tournament, eight strokes off the lead.

Senior Kasey Petty, the 2016 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Golfer of the Year, continued her outstanding play by firing a school record, 5-under par score of 67 in the first round. The school record 67 betters the mark of 68, which she set during the opening round of the Cav Classic on April 16.

Petty posted six birdies on the day and had only one bogey. She birdied holes 2, 8, 10, 11, 15 and 17 and currently has a three-stroke lead over Grand Valley State's Gabrielle Shipley at the event.

Junior Shelby Warner also had a good day for Findlay and is in sixth with a 1-over par score of 73. She was sitting at 3-under par with five holes to play, but bogeyed four out of the last five. During her round, Warner posted four birdies and sprinkled in nine pars.

Freshman Samantha Hatter is tied for 32nd after posting an 81 while sophomore Kelsey Koesters (83) and freshman Makenzie Torres (84) are 46th and 47th, respectively, at the tournament.

Indianapolis leads the tournament after firing a team score of 296 on Monday. Grand Valley State is second with a 302.

The top three teams along with the top three individuals not with one of those teams from the regional will advance to the championship event. The 2016 NCAA Division II National Championship will be held at the CommonGround Golf Course in Aurora, Colo., which is slated to run from May 18-21.
