Petty Wraps Up Day 1 at U.S. Open
Kasey Petty, a recent University of Findlay graduate, posted a 9-over par score of 81 during the opening round of the 2016 U.S. Women's Open on July 7 at CordeValle in San Martin, Calif. Her total puts her in a tie for 146th.
"It felt awesome to be at the U.S. Open for my first event, but I wish I would have performed at lot better," said Petty. "There were a lot of bad breaks and not a lot of putts fell for me today."
Petty, a two-time NCAA Division II All-American, completed her first round as a professional by posting nine pars on the day. She began her day by going 3-over par through the first four holes and then settled in to record four straight pars before taking a bogey on the ninth hole, a 569 yard par-5. Petty began the back-9 with a pair of pars and then recorded bogeys on 12-14 to go to 7-over for the tournament. The Groveport, Ohio native then went 2-over the rest of the way for her total.
Petty, the 2016 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Golfer of the Year, hit 11-of-14 fairways and 7-of-18 greens in regulation during her round. She also averaged 234.0 yards per drive.
"I need to strike the ball better tomorrow and put myself in better position than I was in today. Tiny mistakes are magnified on a course this difficult and those mistakes add up quickly."
Petty is scheduled to hit the course for round two tomorrow at 3:35 p.m. (EST).
