Oilers Leading GLIAC Championship After Day 1

The University of Findlay women's golf team is leading the pack after day one of the 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship, which wrapped up on April 21 at the Virtues Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio.

The Oilers carded a 308 during the first round and lead Northern Michigan University by three strokes in the team standings. Findlay claimed their first place position by making a tournament-high 14 birdies. They also led the field in par 4 scoring at 4.40 and par 5 scoring at 5.00.

Sophomore Makenzie Torres led the way and is currently in first place with a 1-over par score of 73. Torres posted six birdies on the day and finished 2-under par on the back nine. Torres did most of her damage on par 4 scoring as she led the field with a 3.90 scoring average.

Freshman Samantha Kellstrom is in fourth place after posting a 3-over par score of 75 while senior Shelby Warner is tied for fifth with a 4-over par score of 76. Kellstrom was 2-under par through 11 holes before finishing with her 3-over par score of 75. Warner meanwhile was 6-over par with three holes to play, but she birdied 16 and 18 to end the day on a great note.

Freshman Meredith Wipper is tied for 29th after posting an 84 while sophomore Samantha Hatter is tied for 32nd with an 85.

The second day of competition will resume tomorrow.
