Oilers Just Miss Qualifying for Nationals
The University of Findlay women's golf team finished fourth at the NCAA Division II East Regional, which wrapped up third round action on May 10 at the Glenmoor Country Club in Canton, Ohio. The Oilers posted a 294 on Wednesday, the fourth-lowest 18-hole score in school history, and ended the tournament with a three round score of 922 (308, 320, 294), the fifth-lowest 54-hole score in school history.
The Oilers, who are slated to host the 2017 NCAA Division II National Championship on May 17-20 at the Findlay Country Club, missed qualifying for the event by a mere five strokes. Indianapolis won the regional with an 875 and were followed by Grand Valley State (912) and Missouri-St. Louis (918) in the team standings. Those three teams will now head to the national championship, an event in which the Oilers qualified for in the previous three seasons.
Senior Shelby Warner capped her career by tying for ninth at the regional event. Warner posted a 54-hole score of 227 (74, 79, 74). The 2017 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Golfer of the Year posted seven birdies at the event, the fifth-best total at the tournament.
Sophomore Makenzie Torres tied Warner at the event and posted a 3-under par score of 69 on the final day. Her 69 was the fourth-lowest score in school history. Torres recorded a 77 in the first round and then posted an 81 in the second for her 227. Her eight birdies at the event were the fourth-most at the tournament.
Freshman Meredith Wipper finished 22nd at the tournament with a 235 (78, 82, 75) while sophomore Samantha Hatter fired a 236 (79, 78, 79) to tie for 23rd.
Freshman Samantha Kellstrom ended the tournament in 39th place, posting a 242 (82, 84, 76).
