Oilers Fall in 2OT Against Merrimack

The University of Findlay women's lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking 16-15 loss to Merrimack in a double overtime thriller on Sunday, March 2 in North Andover, Mass.

Sarah Lankton scored the first goal of the game just 33 seconds in and Findlay built a 3-0 lead within the first three minutes of the contest.  Merrimack would then battle back to tie the score at 7-7 as both teams entered intermission.

The Oilers opened the second half in a similar fashion, scoring three goals to take a 10-7 lead.  Merrimack would then slowly creep their way back into the game, eventually taking a 13-12 advantage in the final five minutes of regulation.

Down by one, Lankton came to the rescue with a goal to force overtime.  Merrimack would score in the first overtime period, but Lankton tied it up at 14-14 in the second overtime session.

Lankton would then tack on another goal to give Findlay a 15-14 lead, but Merrimack tied the game up on a goal with only 40 seconds remaining to force another overtime period.

In the third extra period, Merrimack scored the winning goal despite a great effort by the Oilers.

The Oilers held a 37-35 advantage in shots and were strong on draw controls as they won 20 of them. 

Lankton led the way with seven goals while Taylor Trice, Kyra Bradley and Nicole Stines each had two apiece.

Katie Poorman played well in the goal for Findlay, stopping eight shots.

The Oilers will now have an exhibition game against Stonehill on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Easton, Mass.
