Lakers Top Oilers in Final Seconds

The University of Findlay women's lacrosse team fell in the final seconds to Grand Valley State University on April 7 at the Armstrong Sports Complex as they dropped an 18-17 decision against the Lakers.

The Lakers came out on fire and took an 8-3 lead in the first 13 minutes of the game. The Oilers then trimmed the deficit to only three goals at 12-9 when the first half concluded. The Oilers would then score the first goal of the second half before each team started trading goals.

Down 14-11 with just under 20 minutes to play, the Oilers went on a 5-0 run to take a 16-14 lead with only 12:20 remaining. The run started with a goal from freshman Ciara Burud, which was followed by a score from sophomore Brie Caruso of an assist by sophomore Hannah Peebles. Peebles then assisted senior Kyra Bradley before sophomore Lexi Miller found the back of the net. Bradley would then cap the 5-0 run by scoring unassisted.

Grand Valley State tied the game at 16-16 with under seven minutes to play, but Burud answered with a free position goal to make the score 17-16. The Lakers would then tie the game at 17-17 with just under four minutes to play before Abbi O'Neal scored the game-winner with only 22 seconds remaining.

The Lakers out-shot the Oilers 31-24 and held a 28-24 advantage in ground balls. They also were able to secure 22 draws compared to only 15 for Findlay.

Bradley paced Findlay with four goals, three assists, three ground balls, two draws and one caused turnover.

Peebles had three goals and three assists while Burud had three goals and three caused turnovers. Caruso also recorded three goals while junior Olivia Sherman racked up a pair of scores.

Freshman Claire Ferrell started the game and allowed eight goals before junior Rachel Heath came in and allowed ten goals to go along with seven saves.

The Oilers will be back at home on Sunday to battle Northern Michigan University at noon.
