White Wins 157 at Midwest Classic

The University of Findlay wrestling team wrapped up the 36th annual Midwest Classic on Dec. 14 in Indianapolis, Ind. The Roughnecks were led by sophomore Joey White, who took home first place in the 157-pound weight class.

White claimed a sudden victory (4-2) over 8th-ranked Greg Hegarty of Marysville in the semifinals to reach the championship round. He then won 1-0 against Upper Iowa's Jordan Rinken in the finals to claim the title with a 5-0 record at the event.

Sophomore Nick Goebel, the 4th-ranked wrestler in the nation, also reached the championship round in the 149-pound weight class for the Roughnecks. Goebel defeated Shorter's Nathan Galloway by 3-1 decision in the semifinals before losing 3-1 in the finals against 2nd-ranked Keenan Hagerty of Maryville. Goebel finished the event with a 3-1 record.

Freshman Josh Wimer also competed on the second day of competition and ended up with a third place finish at 133 with a 6-1 record.  He claimed a 12-11 win over Maryville's Keygan Foster in the third place match to claim the bronze.

The Roughnecks return to the mats on Jan. 4 at the Central Missouri Duals in Warrensburg, Mo.
