4 Roughnecks Reach Semifinals at Regional Tournament

The University of Findlay wrestling team completed the first day of the NCAA Division II Super Regional on Feb. 27 in Pembroke, N.C. The Roughnecks, who are ranked 20th in the nation, are currently in fifth place with 32.5 points.

The Roughnecks will have four grapplers competing in the semifinals tomorrow as freshman Ryan Skonieczny, sophomore Nick Goebel, sophomore Joey White and sophomore Bradley Metz each went unblemished on Friday.

Skonieczny went 1-0 on the day and will wrestle North Carolina-Pembroke's Daniel Ownbery, who is the top-ranked wrestler in the nation at 141, tomorrow in the semifinals for a chance at a regional championship.

Goebel, who is the fifth-ranked wrestler in the nation in the 149-pound weight class, went 2-0 and will face Newberry's Seiji Borja tomorrow while White went 2-0 at 157 and is set to take on Anderson's Sean Turner in the semifinals.

Metz also finished with a 2-0 record at 174 and is staring down North Carolina-Pembroke's Terrence Zaleski for the right to compete for a regional championship.

In addition, sophomore Schuyler Phillips, freshman Josh Wimer, sophomore Nic Sckoniezny and sophomore Luke Fleming are all alive in the consolation bracket.

Phillips went 2-1 at 125, Wimer was 1-1 at 133, Skonieczny was 1-1 at 165 and Fleming went 1-1 in the heavyweight division for the Roughnecks.

The event will conclude tomorrow with the top-4 finishers in each weight class receiving a trip to the NCAA Division II National Championship.
