Roughnecks Compete at MSU Open
The University of Findlay wrestling team traveled to East Lansing, Michigan for the Michigan State Open which was held on Sunday, Nov. 15.
Freshman/Sophomore Division
Sophomore Ryan Skonieczny made a good run in the 141-lb class where he earned fourth place. For the day, Skonieczny went 2-2 and earned a matchup with Wisconsin's Cole Martin in the consolation championship match where the Findlay sophomore lost by fall at the 4:58 mark in the second period.
Sophomore Josh Wimer's run came to an end in the consolation semi-finals of the 141-lb tournament where he fell to Austin Nash of Purdue by sudden victory with the bout at 6-4. For the tournament, Wimer went 3-2 which included an 18-3, dominating tech fall victory over Trenton Soto from Notre Dame. Wimer finished in eighth place.
Also making the consolation semi's was freshman Chancellor Sonnenburg, who competed at 174 lbs. He finished 2-2 in the tournament which placed him in eighth in his weight class. Sonnenburg picked up wins over Ohio's Dontae McGee (10-9) and Bucknell's Chad Reese (5-3).
Freshman Michael Stewart competed at 125 pounds and came away with a 2-2 record which included 9-4 and 5-3 decisions in consolation rounds one and two.
In the 165-lb tournament, Findlay freshman Alonzo Turner tallied a 3-2 record. He picked up wins over wrestlers from Notre Dame, Ashland, and Northern Illinois before he was taken out of the tournament in the fourth round of the consolation bracket by Isaac Best from Kent State a score of 3-2.
Open Division
Junior Nic Goebel ended up taking sixth place in the 149-lb bracket where he fell to Wisconsin's Andrew Crone in the fifth place match by a 10-7 decision. Goebel finished with a 3-2 record in the tournament, including a 13-1 major decision over Ohio State's Blake Riley-Hawkins.
Junior Joey White finished his tournament with a 2-2 record in the 157-lb class. His two wins came in consolation rounds two and three where he picked up a 6-3 decision over Matt Pasqualini of Michigan State and a 5-2 decision over Ronnie Mack of Eastern Michigan.
The Roughnecks are back on the mat next weekend, Saturday, Nov. 21, as they play host for the Findlay Open being held in the Koehler Center.
