Oilers Play Host to Findlay Open

The University of Findlay wrestling team hosted the Findlay Open in Saturday, Nov. 21. The meet featured more than 300 wrestlers from 21 teams.

Roughneck standout junior Nick Goebel was able to take the championship at 149 lbs. After defeating Trey Grine of Tiffin University in the final with a major decision of 11-2, Goebel finished with a 5-0 record in the tournament. He also won by major decision in the first round over Anthony Trocchio of John Carroll.

At 157 lbs., junior Joey White finished as the runner-up. He dropped a tightly contested 4-2 decision in the finals to Juwan Edmond of Notre Dame College. White finished 4-1 in the tournament and picked up a pin over Gannon's Tyler Workman in the second round.

Junior Nic Skonieczny also earned tournament runner-up as he lost a 3-1 decision to Tyler Hardtke, of John Carroll, in the championship match. He competed at 165 lbs. And finished the tournament with a 4-1 record, including a third-round victory over Ohio State's Jeremy Scott.

At 197 lbs., junior Gerald Beck and sophomore Dalton Ishmael found themselves pitted against each other in the third place match. Ishmael came out on top of that match by a 7-6 decision, earning him third in the tournament. Ishmael ended with a record of 4-1 while Beck took fourth with a record of 1-2.

Freshman Michael Stwart was able to finish in fifth in the 125-lb class after going 4-1 including a 12-6 decision over Tiffin's Giuseppe Penzone in the fifth place match. Stewart dropped his first match but won four straight to win the consolation bracket.

Freshman Devin Rogers went 3-1 on the day and was able to collect a third place finish after winning by medical forfeit in the third place match. Rogers competed at 133 lbs.

The Roughnecks are back on the mats on Saturday, December 5 when they will travel to Ada, Ohio for the Ohio Northern Invitational. That event will begin at 9:00am.
